‘Neuter Your Ex’ aims to neuters cats, names them after ex-partners ...Middle East

The Tuscaloosa Spray and Neuter Incentive Program hosted their “Neuter Your Ex” event, where they take donations, with the goal of lessening the unwanted domestic animal population in Tuscaloosa and surrounding cities.

The project is being hosted by Jeffery Parker, an associate professor of psychology, and his community based psychology class. At the beginning of the semester Parker’s class met with the TSNIP board to decide on what project they had in mind.

Chloe Lolley, a sophomore criminal justice major in the class, said they created a system where students can give five dollars and “sponsor” the neutering or spaying of a feral cat. Students’ donations also allow them to name the cat after an ex boyfriend or girlfriend, therefor “fixing” them.

After scanning the QR code, sponsors are asked for their ex’s name, a message about their ex, a screenshot of their donation and their name and email so they can receive a photo of the cat they helped get neutered.

This project was created to help raise awareness to students at the University of Alabama about the feral cat population and why it is so high. The TSNIP defines a stray cat as “an unsocialized outdoor cat who has either never had any physical contact with humans or human interaction has diminished over time and she/he is no longer accustomed to it.”

Lolley said that college students are a huge reason why the population is so high. He said students will get a pet, then soon realize it is too much work and will release the cats leaving them homeless.

Parker has been working with TSNIP for a few years, including work on a children’s book to “educate” the next generation about the “importance of spay and neuter.”

“This group always delivers strong community outreach programs,” said Beth Bobo, the president of TSNIP, about Parker’s classes in their 2024 Annual Report. “Educating our community on spay & neuter to control pet overpopulation and provide better outcomes for pets is essential to our mission.”

Parker’s class has promoted this event around campus through flyers, tablings at the student center and funny social media posts to get students involved and aware of the event. Through this, around 50 UA students have stopped and donated after seeing the tabling.

“I thought it was hilarious, and definitely something I’ve never seen before,” said Addison Hieronymus, a freshman majoring in nursing. “It really captured my eye.”
