A dozen couples with an average of 64 years of marriage renewed their vows Wednesday in Lake Barrington at a senior living community.
The ceremony featured an aisle adorned with flowers and tulle, and a pastor to preside over the vows. A live musician played for the reception, accompanied by cake and champagne, and just in time for Valentine’s Day.
“We basically renew our vows every day,” said resident George Schneider. “Every day,” his wife Angela echoed.
The two met when they were 17 and 18 years old at The University of Detroit. They dated for four years before tying the knot in 1966.
“We had a beautiful June day, 84 degrees, low humidity, (and) it was lovely,” Angela said. “And I wore my mother’s wedding dress.”
She was wearing the same pearl necklace George gifted her on her wedding day for Wednesday’s renewal.
The two had jobs within the insurance industry and education, which eventually brought them to Illinois. They raised three children, and now have four grandchildren.
For them a long-lasting and happy marriage has always been about values and respect.
“The important thing is to communicate, don’t hold things in… and never lie,” George said.
“It’s not where you came from, but it’s if you’re going together in the same direction,” Angela added.
It’s not the first time the pair renewed their vows. They say they renew them in some way or another every day, keeping the same promise they made each other nearly 60 years ago.
Walter and Nancy Dobbs also renewed their vows at the ceremony, 77 years after they first tied the knot. They marked the longest married couple at the event, and celebrated with a kiss and sips of champagne.
