As we begin 2026, the Greeley Police Department would like to take a moment to reflect on where we have been, where we are today, and where we are headed as a community.
On behalf of the more than 230 sworn officers and professional staff who serve our city every day, thank you for your continued trust and support. Public safety is not something we provide alone — it is a partnership with the residents we serve. That belief is reflected in our mission: “Proudly Working with the Citizens to Protect Our Community.”
Our department’s priorities remain clear and focused: improving traffic safety; pursuing violent offenders, narcotics traffickers, and gang members; working collaboratively with the community to address quality-of-life issues; delivering ethical, lawful and professional police services; leveraging technology to enhance public safety; and recruiting and retaining the very best people to serve Greeley.
For the first time since 2020, the Greeley Police Department is fully staffed with its authorized number of sworn officers. This milestone is the result of tireless work by our training unit and in-house instructors, who have successfully hired both new cadets and experienced lateral officers. Full staffing allows us to be more proactive, visible, and responsive throughout the city.
Traffic safety continues to be a shared responsibility and a daily focus for every uniformed officer. Education, warnings, and enforcement all play a role. Our mobile speed enforcement vans, known as AVIS, have proven to be an effective force multiplier. We carefully evaluate crash data, high-accident locations and community concerns to guide deployment. As a Greeley resident myself, I can say the speed vans have influenced my own driving behavior — which is exactly the goal. Importantly, city ordinance requires that any revenue collected beyond equipment, staffing and administrative costs is directed to Public Works for traffic-calming initiatives.
Technology also continues to play a critical role in public safety. Our overt public cameras and automated license plate readers have already contributed to hundreds of successful investigations. In the coming weeks, we will take another step forward with the implementation of our Drone as First Responder program. Four docked drones, located on city-owned buildings, along with two portable units, will be dispatched to high-priority and in-progress calls. This program will allow for faster response times, real-time information for officers, improved situational awareness, and a reduction in injuries to both officers and suspects.
Transparency in crime data is essential. The Greeley Police Department reports Part I crimes to the FBI through the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). Violent crimes include murder, sexual assault, aggravated assault, and robbery. Property crimes include arson, burglary, theft and motor vehicle theft.
In 2025, Greeley experienced a 27% decrease in violent crime and an 18% decrease in property crime compared to 2024. Aggravated assaults dropped by 25%, and robberies declined by 52%. Motor vehicle thefts — a crime that has significantly impacted communities nationwide — saw a 58% reduction from the prior year. To put that progress into perspective: Greeley reported 1,288 vehicle thefts in 2023, 897 in 2024, and just 375 in 2025.
These outcomes reflect the dedication of our officers, detectives and professional staff, as well as the cooperation and engagement of our community. Targeting repeat offenders, solving crimes, and serving with integrity remains our daily mission.
As we move forward into 2026, we are committed to building on this momentum through proactive policing, strategic technology use, and strong community partnerships. Thank you for your continued support.
