Donald Trump has found himself on the back foot once again over the Jeffrey Epstein files after a document appeared to undermine one of his central claims regarding his association with the financier.
The newly discovered FBI document released by the US Justice Department suggests that Trump called a police chief in Florida in 2006 to tell him that “everyone” knew about the late paedophile financier’s behaviour.
The document appears to undermine the US President‘s repeated claims that although he had socialised with Epstein, he knew nothing of his crimes.
However, the alleged call has raised questions about what he knew and when.
What the new document tells us
The document, a 2019 FBI interview with a former police chief in Palm Beach, Florida, alleges that Trump called police in 2006, telling him: “Thank goodness you’re stopping him, everyone has known he’s been doing this.”
The document also says Trump was one of the “very first people” to call the police department when he found out it had been investigating Epstein.
The name of the officer is redacted but identifies the interview subject as the department’s then police chief, Michael Reiter, who told the Miami Herald he received the call from Trump.
Reiter also told the FBI that Trump said he was around Epstein when he was with teenagers and that he “got the hell out of there”. Reiter said Trump added that “people in New York knew he was disgusting”.

Palm Beach police were at that time investigating Epstein over the alleged sexual exploitation of underage girls.
The case was later turned over to federal prosecutors who made a plea deal with Epstein in 2008 that included a non-prosecution agreement, after which he was incarcerated for only 13 months.
Epstein killed himself in his New York prison cell in 2019 while being held on sex trafficking and conspiracy charges ahead of a trial.
How file could undermine previous claims
The document would appear to undermine one of the President’s central claims about the matter: that he knew nothing of Epstein’s misconduct.
When the disgraced financier was arrested for sex trafficking in 2019, Trump was asked if he had any suspicions that Epstein was molesting underage girls. He replied: “No, I had no idea. I had no idea. I haven’t spoken to him in many, many years.”
Trump has said he broke off contact with him around 2004 – years before Epstein was first arrested – after having socialised with him throughout the 1990s.
He claimed that they fell out after Epstein and Maxwell tried to “steal” his employees from his club in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
He added: “When I heard about it, I told him, we don’t want you taking our people… He was fine and then not too long after that he did it again and I said ‘outta here’.”

Asked last July, Trump said: “No, I don’t know really why. But I said if he’s taking anybody from Mar-a-Lago, he’s hiring or whatever he’s doing – I didn’t like it – and we threw him out. We said we don’t want him at the place.”
After news of the new FBI document came to light, the White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday that the call to the police chief “may or may not have happened in 2006. I don’t know the answer.”
She added: “What President Trump has always said is that he kicked Jeffrey Epstein out of his Mar-a-Lago club because Jeffrey Epstein was a creep… And that remains true in this call. If it did happen, it corroborates exactly what President Trump has said from the beginning.”
The White House has never explained why Trump believed Epstein was a “creep”.
However, when Trump was asked about it last summer, he refused to answer the question, instead lashing out at the reporter asking it.
What does this mean for Trump?
This newly discovered document could be followed by further findings as members of Congress start trawling through the unredacted versions of the Epstein files following allegations of improper redactions.
Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin said: “In the database, I typed in the words ‘Trump,’ ‘Donald or Don’ and it came up with more than a million results.”
This latest controversy could also lead to further fracturing of his Maga support base, many of whom have been calling for transparency on Epstein for years, experts have suggested.
Mark Shanahan, associate professor of political engagement at the University of Surrey, said: “The Magda base are growing less satisfied with Trump by the day particularly over this. If we go back less than a year and a half, he was using his stump speech around the country to say ‘all of the Epstein files must be released, this is going to uncover vast criminality across the Democrats’. He gets into office in January 2025 and does a 180.”
He added: “Maga becomes quite discomforted by this because for a number of people this was one of the key pillars why they voted for Trump – that he was going to expose what they had known all along: that there was a cabal of entitled insiders around Washington who were doing awful things.”
