At least nine people have been killed and many injured following a shooting at a high school in British Columbia, Canada.
The suspect was also found dead with what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury, taking the total death toll to 10, following the shooting in a town in a remote part of northeastern British Columbia, Canadian police said.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said officers found multiple victims after responding to a report of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge secondary school at around 1:20pm local time.
Six people were found dead inside the school, and two more people were found dead at a residence believed to be connected to the incident, while another died while being airlifted to hospital.
Police said two people had been airlifted to hospital with serious or life‑threatening injuries and around 25 others are being assessed and triaged at the local medical centre for non‑life‑threatening injuries.
Tumbler Ridge is a remote municipality with a population of around 2,400 people located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in northern British Columbia, approximately 1,155 km northeast of Vancouver.
Police have asked residents of the town to stay inside as additional police resources are being deployed to the area from neighbouring areas.
The Peace River South School District said Tuesday that there was a the “lockdown and secure and hold” at both the secondary school and the Tumbler Ridge Elementary school.
Larry Neufeld, the member of the legislature for Peace River South, told reporters at the legislature that an “excess” of resources, including RCMP and ambulance support, have been sent to the community.
