Police Make Arrest in 2021 Acid Attack That Disfigured Long Island Woman ...Middle East

Police on Long Island, New York, say they have identified and arrested the perpetrator of a vicious 2021 acid attack that left a college student disfigured.

Nafiah Ikram was attacked in March 2021 outside her Elmont home by a hooded man who splashed a cup filled with acid in her face and drove away.

The incident left her face disfigured and singed her throat.

But on Tuesday, February 10, police revealed they had arrested Terrell Campbell, 29, for the heinous crime.

Campbell, according to police, lives in Brooklyn and delivers flowers. He is now facing two counts of assault, possession of a weapon and possession of noxious material.

Us Weekly confirmed that Campbell entered not guilty pleas during a hearing held early Tuesday afternoon.

“We believe this almost 5-year-old mystery has finally been solved,” announced Queens District Attorney Anne Donnelly, who explained in a statement a break in the case came late last year.

Donnelly did not say what that new evidence was, but she did confirm it helped police eventually identify Campbell as the prime suspect.

Officers reportedly tracked down his address, where they found a red Nissan Altima — the same type of car that was seen speeding away from the area after Ikram was attacked.

Prosecutors said Campbell conducted a number of incriminating and shocking web searches immediately after the attack, including “sulfuric acid remover,” “sulfuric acid on car seat” and “Can you recover from a sulfuric acid attack?”

They also said he is an aspiring rapper who released a song with lyrics that reference burning someone’s face with acid.

“This heartless defendant intended to cause her irreparable harm. Later, he cared so little about the traumatic life-altering injuries he caused that he used the attack to further his rap career,” said Donnelly.

If convicted, Campbell could be sent away for up to 25 years.

Ikram opened up about the horrific attack while speaking to CBS 2 in 2024. She said the attack has left her in constant pain.

“Mentally, every day is a challenge,” Ikram said.

At the time, Ikram said she was living in fear because the suspect was still roaming freely.

“I’m still suffering to this day. Look, I had that surgery to release the scarring, and I still can’t open my mouth. I have scars all over my face and they are still not even halfway done,” she said in a February 2023 interview. “I’m still disabled. I can’t see out of my right side right now. I still need someone to drive me everywhere.”

Ikram said she does what she can to stay positive. She now has an emotional support pet, and she keeps a daily journal.

She also continues to receive skin grafts. “Learning that every day is a new blessing and an opportunity to be great,” Ikram said.

Ikram plans on finishing college and wants to work as a trauma doctor, she told CBS 2.

She also gives public lectures about the experience to help other victims as they try to cope.
