Watch Ilia Malinin's ‘next level' skate in the men's short program at the Winter Olympics ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Ilia Malinin showed his dominance as the “quad god” in the men’s figure skating short program, but he still acknowledged he has more in him.

Malinin was determined to show what he could do after a shaky, by only his standards, skate during the team event. And he did.

“The quad god says tonight I own this Olympic ice,” commentator Terry Gannon said after Malinin’s skate.

Olympic gold medalist and commentator Tara Lipinski called it “next level.”

“This performance was literally everything he needed,” Olympian and commentator Johnny Weir said.

Despite his stunning skate, Malinin fell short of his best score, finishing with 108.16.

The American phenom acknowledged that while his nerves may have seemed nonexistent in previous competitions, Olympic ice feels different.

“It’s felt different from any competition I’ve done,” he said, adding that “it really overwhelms you.”

Olympian and host Scott Hamilton appreciated Malinin’s honesty.

“I am so glad he’s honest about that because you could just sense things were different,” Hamilton said, saying Malinin looked “tight” in his performance Tuesday.

Malinin said he plans to continue to try to calm his nerves before his full program in the men’s free skate Friday.

“We’re definitely gonna see me at the best condition that I can be,” he said.

If that’s true, viewers will be in for quite a show.

Malinin is expected to attempt a quad axel, a 4 1/2-revolution jump that only he has ever landed in competition. He has been known to land as many as seven quads in a single performance before, a number he could again attempt on Olympic ice.

Malinin finished first in the men’s short, giving him a leg up heading into Friday. His closest competitor was Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama, who scored 103.07 following a small fall in his routine.
