A serious crash involving a car and a semi-truck on I-80/94 heading from Gary to Chicago shut down all westbound lanes during the busy Tuesday morning commute, the Indiana State Police said.
ISP Sgt. Glen Fifield posted about the crash on X just before 8 a.m.
“Serious injuries,” Fifield’s post said. “Expect lengthy delays this morning.”
At one point, a Medevac helicopter responded to the scene, NBC 5 traffic reporter Kye Martin said, landing on the Borman Expressway in Gary. The helicopter transported one person with serious injuries, TrafficNet reported.
As of 8:50 a.m., I-80/94 westbound lanes were closed between Burr and Grant Streets, with traffic and backups as far as I-65.
“Seek alternate routes,” the Department of Transportation in northwest Indiana said.
Traffic cameras in the area showed traffic moving on the eastbound side of the highway, with the westbound side completely shutdown.
