In a season-ending dual between in-state rivals Utah and Brigham Young University, the two Big 12 opponents each earned a near equal victory as the BYU women downed the Utes for the first time since 2012 in 160-140, while the Utah men ended a two -meet losing streak against the Cougars 160-140.

Women’s Recap:

The BYU 200 medley relay team of Emma Marusakova (25.20), Lucy Warnick (27.92), Sarah Eliason (24.30), and Tatum Cooley (22.00) swam the fastest ever time in the history of the Richards Building Pool in 1:39.42, kicking off the scoring for the BYU women.

Haylee Tiffany locked in a new pool record of her own in the 200 freestyle, leading a 1-2 finish for the Cougars in 1:47.89. Her teammate Kara Martinson finished 2nd in a season-best 1:49.50.

Marusakova then led another 1-2 finish for BYU in the 100 back, swimming her fastest time of the season in 54.27, and her teammate, Katya Hulse notching a career best 54.69 for 2nd. Hulse later topped the final results in the 200 back, taking the win by just 13 hundredths in 2:00.48, her fastest time this season.

Warnick added onto the successful day for the Cougars with the fastest 100 breaststroke of her career in 1:01.47 to earn the event win. Warnick completed the breaststroke sweep with a dominant three and a half second win in the 200 breast, clocking 2:13.48. Her 3rd and final individual win in the 200 IM in 2:01.86.

BYU’s Colley swam the fastest 100 free of her career to lead a 1-2-3 sweep in 49.59. Cooley was the only sub 50 second swimmer in the event.

Sarah Eliason led the 100 fly field in a season best 53.74 for the BYU win.

The final relay, the 400 free relay, consisted of Tiffany (50.07), Victoria Schreiber (50.29), Kara Martinson (50.29), and Cooley (49.64) combined for a pool record of 3:20.29 and secured the first win over the Utes since 2012.

Utah’s Hayley Smith notched a lifetime best to win the 1000 free in 10:04.24, five seconds better than Schreiber of BYU in 10:09.45.

The 200 fly was dominated by the Utes, as Sydney Even (2:02.05), Sophia Cerimele (2:03.10), and Veronica Gourley (2:03.99) finished 1-2-3. Even and Cerimele each notched personal bests, while Gourley’s time was the fastest of the season for her.

Utah’s Erin Palmer finished ahead of four BYU swimmers to win the 50 free in 22.27, less than a quarter of a second better than BYU’s Cooley, who set a lifetime best in 22.59.

The Utes had a pair of women’s diving wins with Callie Eagleston (297.00) leading a top-three Utah sweep on 1-meter. Kathryn Grant was the top finisher on 3-meter in 341.85; Utah claimed the top five spots on 3-meter.

Men’s Recap:

Utah’s first men’s win of the day came in the 200 free, as Nick Chirafisi led the field in the only sub-1:36 performance of 1:35.23, notching a new pool record in the win.

Leading the way for the Utes was Evan VanBrocklin, who took wins on both the 100 and 200 fly in 46.84 and 1:44.76, respectively.

Noah Dunkel led a 1-2-3 sweep of Utah 47-second 100 backstrokers as he reached the wall first in 47.34.

Brandon Miller led a sweep of the top three in the 200 back later in the meet, with all three Utes touching under 1:48, and Miller finishing atop them all in 1:45.06.

Strahinja Maslo battled for the 200 IM win with BYU’s Tanner Nelson, clocking 1:46.49, just a quarter of a second ahead of Nelson in 1:49.74.

The BYU men followed the lead of their women’s team by setting a new Richards Building Pool record in the 200 medley relay; the team of Tanner Edwards (22.09), Peter Etzold (23.60), Jacob Aina (1:06.05), and Max Kleinman (19.00) combined to down the Utes in 1:25.05.

Utah’s Elias Petersen added wins for the Utes in the  1-meter (370.30) and 3-meter (398.55) diving events.

Finn Winkler (44.23), Davis Stachelek (43.83), Chirafisi (43.94), and VanBrocklin (42.85) put a stamp on the Utes’ win over the Cougars with a 400 free relay in 2:54.85.

Senior Darwin Anderson notched another pool record for the Cougars in the 1000 free, touching in a season-best effort of 9:11.58.

Etzold and Evan VanderSluis led the 100 breast field, finishing 1-2 for BYU as Etzold touched 1st in 52.65 and VanderSluis just behind in 53.34.

Sophomore Max Kleinman stopped the clock in the only sub-20-second 50 free of the day in 19.56, nearly half a second faster than the field. He then completed the sprint free sweep with a win in the 100 free, clocking 43.42.

Senior Tyler Edlefsen led another 1-2 breaststroke finish, stopping the clock in 1:57.76. Etzold was just behind in 1:58.24.

Tanner Nelson picked up the 500 free win for the Cougars, touching just over two seconds better than Utah’s Nick Chirafisi (4:25.04) in 4:22.89.
