UNC Basketball in the AP Poll: Men Rise to No. 11, Women Rise to No. 21 ...Middle East

News by : (chapelboro) -

After the UNC men’s and women’s basketball teams each picked up big wins last week, both squads have risen in the latest edition of the AP Poll. The men’s team rose three spots to No. 11, while the women’s team rose four spots to No. 21.

For the men, No. 11 is the team’s highest ranking of the season after beginning at No. 25. The Tar Heels earned an 87-77 win against Syracuse Monday and then upset No. 4 Duke 71-68 on a last-second three-pointer from Seth Trimble Saturday evening. The fourth-ranked Blue Devils are the highest-ranked team Carolina has beaten all season. Duke is still the highest-ranked ACC team in Monday’s poll, staying put at No. 4. After UNC, Virginia checks in at No. 15 after rising three spots, Clemson holds firm at No. 20 and Louisville stays at No. 24. NC State received the third-most votes of any unranked team. On the women’s side, the Tar Heels’ four-spot jump to No. 21 comes after the team went 3-0 during the week. Carolina earned a hard-fought win at NC State Monday night, staving off a late Wolfpack rally for head coach Courtney Banghart’s first-ever victory in Raleigh. UNC then beat Clemson at Carmichael Arena Thursday and rolled past Wake Forest in Winston-Salem Sunday afternoon.

Elsewhere in the poll, Louisville remains the highest-ranked ACC team at No. 9 despite taking its first conference loss against Duke during the week. The Blue Devils check in at No. 11, with Carolina being the only other ranked ACC team. NC State received five votes. For a full look at the women’s poll, click here.

Up next for the Tar Heels is a home date against SMU at Carmichael Arena Thursday night at 6 p.m.
