As the American short course swimming season rounds the corner and heads toward spring championship meets, the season-long IMX battle is coming into focus for a number of clubs, especially in the younger age groups.
The IMX program is designed to be reflective of a swimmer’s versatility, though in practice the event selection is a bit antiquated and reflective of the cultural American bias toward higher volume and middle distance swimming events – which makes sense in its context of the “IMs” which are middle distance races.
With the addition of the stroke 50s to the Olympics, though, it might be time to consider an expansion of the program to include sprint times. The IMR program does that, sort of, but doesn’t include a freestyle race shorter than 200 yards for swimmers aged 11 or older.
Swimmers are assigned a power point score for their top times in a season in one distance from each stroke category.
9 & Under, 10-year olds: 200 Free, 100 Back, 100 Breast, 100 Fly, 200 IM 11-year olds, 12-year olds: 400 Free (LCM) or 500 Free (SCY), 100 Back, 100 Breast, 100 Fly, 200 IM 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18-year olds: 400 Free (LCM) or 500 Free (SCY), 200 Back, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, 200 IM, 400 IMAs swimmers get older, they tend to specialize more-and-more and are less likely to race all of the requisite events in a season, especially in a championship atmosphere. That makes the 19 & over rankings a bit wonky, though to be fair, the 19 & over rankings, while tracked by USA Swimming, aren’t technically part of the program.
