WATCH LIVE: Figure skating team event – pairs free skate

Ilia Malinin will skate again, Amber Glenn will make her Milan Cortina debut and Chicago-area skater Danny O’Shea will look to lift Team USA to gold medal status in a tight fight to the finish.

The team competition will end with the final three events: pairs, women’s and men’s free skates.

The U.S. enters the day just five points ahead of Japan as they look to defend their gold-medal status following the 2022 Beijing Games.

Team USA managed to keep their lead after a “sensational” performance from Madison Chock and Evan Bates in the ice dance free skate and a second-place skate from 21-year-old phenom Malinin in the men’s short program.

But on Sunday, Malinin will be looking to get back on top — and he’s proven he can do it.

Here’s how to watch and what to expect:

Who is competing Sunday?

Malinin is set to return to the ice Sunday following a surprising upset in the men’s short program Saturday.

Malinin posted the second-highest score, even completing a historic backflip during his routine, but a couple of shaky jumps lowered his score to 98.00.

Reigning silver medalist Yuma Kagiyama landed a pair of near-perfect quads, one in combination with a triple toe loop, and scored 108.67 points for his short program Saturday night. That topped Malinin for the segment — he was second with 98.00 — and gave his Japanese team 33 points, just one behind the defending champion U.S. at the midway juncture of the competition.

Malinin did not do his historic quad axel in the routine, but he is expected to attempt it Sunday. The 4 1/2-revolution jump is one only he has ever landed in competition

On the women’s side, Glenn will take to the ice for the first time, following Alysa Liu’s stellar skate in the women’s short program.

Glenn has been nearly unbeatable the past two years and is the only American woman trying a triple axel at the Games, but it’s not clear if she will attempt that in the team event Sunday.

The final team events will feature a return to the ice for Illinois skate O’Shea and his skating partner Ellie Kam.

The two finished fifth in the pairs short program with a score of 66.59 after a fall by Kam during their performance. Still, it was enough to help keep the Americans in the lead in the team event.

O’Shea is known for his lifts and his free skate with Kam is expected to feature some incredible ones.

“If there’s anyone I’d want to lift me it would be Danny O’Shea,” Lipinski said during his performance, adding that “Danny has stolen my heart.”

“It’s taken him 30 years to get to this moment,” she added.

Where things stand

As of Sunday morning, the U.S. and Japan were vying for gold with 44 and 39 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, Italy, Canada and Georgia were all following close behind.
