The Chicago Bulls enacted a comprehensive team teardown in time for this season’s trade deadline Thursday — but it may have been too little, too late.
Chicago was called out by SB Nation’s Ricky O’Donnell and The Athletic‘s Zach Harper for their bizarrely guard-heavy trade haul bereft of new first-round picks. And Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, for one, is skeptical that Karnisovas would even still have any job — at all — were it not for the Reinsdorf family’s apparent affection.
There’s little question that this new Bulls squad was built to lose. At 24-28, Chicago just slipped out of the Eastern Conference play-in tournament bracket. The Charlotte Hornets own a tiebreak, but for now have the same record. Featuring a mismanaged roster still loaded with guards on expiring contracts, the Bulls will now compete for lottery balls against clubs that have already done a much better job at tanking the season.
Still, the 2026 NBA Draft class is loaded, and with flattened lottery odds these days it’s very possible that Chicago could move up.
Several new-look Bulls put up good numbers while getting blown out 123-107 on Thursday to a Toronto Raptors squad missing two starters. Playing for nothing in Chicago could be the ideal scenario for 2026 free agents Anfernee Simons (who scored a Bulls-most 22 points on good efficiency while playing no defense), Guerschon Yabusele (who notched a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double off the bench) and Jaden Ivey (who scored 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor).
At the same time, Simons’ scoring bag is pretty fun, Yabusele when motivated is a crafty undersized big, and Ivey could become the classic “second draft” addition who blossoms with more time in the sun. Maybe these tanking Bulls will be fun-bad?
Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images In a twist, brief Bull Mike Conley Jr. has picked his next team: the Minnesota Timberwolves! He was traded from Minnesota to Chicago earlier this week in the three-team Jaden Ivey trade, then was shipped to the Charlotte Hornets as part of the Coby White deal. The Hornets are waiving him, after which Shams Charania of ESPN reports that he’ll rejoin the Timberwolves. ESPN’s Bobby Marks writes that, had the Bulls waived him, we would not have been able to return to Minnesota right away. The 6-foot-1 OSU product had been with the Timberwolves since a midseason trade three years ago. Jevon Carter, who was waived by the Bulls this past weekend, has agreed to a new deal to join the Orlando Magic, his agents Mark Bartelstein and Reggie Brown at Priority Sports inform Charania. Bulls team president Arturas Karnisovas, who stunningly remains gainfully employed after mismanaging all of his best assets over the last several years in trades, spoke with the media over Zoom to discuss his seven trades this week. All told, Chicago added nine (!) second-round picks, plus Ivey, Rob Dillingham, Nick Richards, Yabusele, Leonard Miller (brother of now-ex-Bull Emanuel), Collin Sexton and Simons. Chicago also promoted Windy City Bulls affiliate player Mac McClung to a two-way deal.“The play-in is not our goal, the championship is. We know where we are in the standings, and we’re not satisfied with being in the middle as an organization, or for our fans. At the same time, we are committed to building the right way without skipping steps. This process takes time, but we’ve already made [a] meaningful shift in how we are approaching roster building and development.”
Several now-former-Bulls penned farewell tributes upon being moved, including now-Boston Celtics center Nikola Vucevic on X and now-Timberwolves guard Ayo Dosunmu via his Instagram Stories. Former Chicago Hall of Fame small forward Scottie Pippen is auctioning off a good chunk of personal memorabilia from his decorated NBA career via Sotheby’s, per Brooks Peck of The Athletic. The seven-time All-Star, 10-time All-Defensive Teamer and six-time Bulls champion is offloading his entire trophy collection, game-worn jerseys, sneakers and more.“Each jersey, sneaker, and collectible I’ve kept over the years holds a memory, a feeling, a story of perseverance and teamwork,” Pippen said in a Sotheby’s press statement. “Now, it feels like the right time to share these pieces and let others carry their stories forward. I’m excited to give fans and collectors the chance to own these special items, to connect with the history and memories they represent, and to experience a part of the journey I was lucky enough to live. I hope they bring the same kind of pride, joy, and love of the game that they’ve given me throughout my career.”
The items are expected to fetch $6 million or more when they hit auction in March. It’s a bummer that Pippen himself won’t be holding on to at least some of these artifacts, but presumably they’ll find homes with appreciative Bulls and sports fans.
