The Potential Cost of a Maxx Crosby Trade ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

It has been about 24 hours since NFL on FOX insider Jay Glazer shared his belief that the end of the line is near for Maxx Crosby as a member of the Las Vegas Raiders. Knowing that Crosby’s future figures to be a point of discussion, we dissected the info here. However, that figures to be the first of many Crosby-related posts we do this offseason. Between the Bears’ needs along the defensive line and General Manager Ryan Poles’ history of having a willingness to make a splashy move, Crosby’s availability is a story worth following for the next few months.

What would it take to trade for Maxx Crosby?

Over at CBS Sports, Tyler Sullivan explores potential offseason trades. And because Super Bowl Week is often where a ton of NFL rumors take root, this piece feels like a worthwhile read. During the exercise, Sullivan shares what he believes it would cost to trade for Maxx Crosby — a first-round pick and a second-round selection. At first blush, that looks like fair compensation. Crosby is a star, but he is coming off a season-ending knee injury that required offseason surgery (it was successful, by the way!) back in January.

Meanwhile, Glazer suggested that a Crosby trade would surprise what the Dallas Cowboys received for star pass rusher Micah Parsons. In case you’re unfamiliar with that deal, Green Bay sent Dallas two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark to complete the deal. I’ll never forgive Jerry Jones for gift-wrapping 26-year-old Micah Parsons to the Packers. But I digress, as that is a different conversation for another post.

There is a part of me that struggles to imagine a Maxx Crosby trade fetching more than what the Cowboys received in the Micah Parsons deal. Crosby is about to play the 2026 NFL season as he enters his age-29 campaign. Parsons was jumping into his age-26 season when that trade went down. Plus, Crosby might need an extension because he has just $30 million left in remaining guarantees on his deal (despite being under contract through 2029). And with Parsons resetting the market on that deal, I feel as if that might give some teams pause.

Then again, there is a part of me that thinks about Jay Glazer saying that 20 teams called him asking about Maxx Crosby’s potential availability. If true, a market of 20 teams could create a bidding war, drive up the price of doing business, and result in a team forking over more than what Green Bay gave Dallas to get Micah Parsons. No matter how you slice it, this is a story worth keeping tabs on all offseason long.

Are the Bears interested? Should they be?

Now that we have an idea of what it would cost a team to cut a deal with Maxx Crosby, should the Bears be the ones to do it?

Before I share my thoughts on the matter, I think what the Trib’s Brad Biggs says in his recent mailbag is noteworthy:

The Bears would need to have legitimate internal conversations about any player of Crosby’s ability who is available — if any are available. But my intuition is that general manager Ryan Poles would have a hard time bundling two first-round draft picks or something close to that to acquire Crosby. If the price is lower, then it would be an intriguing option.

If the Bears are the team that pulls the trigger on the deal, it would indicate some things. Firstly, it would be an indication in how much this franchise believes in Caleb Williams as its franchise quarterback. Going all-in to trade for a defensive game-changer while your starting quarterback is still on his rookie contract is a vote of confidence. If your front office truly believes in Caleb as QB1, then that group should commit to exploring trades for impact players who maximize on a competitive window that opens during a quarterback’s first contract.

I also believe that a trade for Crosby would come with an extension, which would show the team’s willingness to spend money on high-priced talent. For what it’s worth, the Bears have been willing to shell out big contracts in recent years. However, they have done such a poor job distributing those contracts that it makes it hard to remember how much they’ve spent.

When it comes to a Maxx Crosby deal, I have salary cap and trade capital concerns that would need to be sorted out before I fully jumped on board. With that being said, let’s not act like Crosby isn’t the type of impact player that Bears fans dream about acquiring. The player and fit are too good ignore. Why wouldn’t the Bears be interested in making that kind of deal? After all, don’t they want to acquire as much star-power as possible while trying to sell fans on possibly trekking to a new stadium in Indiana?

We saw what it was like when Ryan Pace stuck the landing on the Khalil Mack trade. Now, imagine pulling that off while your team has a quarterback that led his team to a division title and knocked off the arch-rival Packers in a playoff game as a second-year signal caller. That is drool-worthy stuff! And yet, Maxx Crosby won’t be the only option the Bears can look at when it comes to bolstering their defense — which is something we should keep in mind this offseason. It isn’t a Maxx Crosby or bust kind of situation. But he might be the best option to hit the market, which is so alluring.
