Melia Costa has announced her commitment to transfer to Colorado State to continue her academic and athletic careers after spending her undergraduate career at Cal Poly. Costa spent three seasons with Cal Poly’s varsity team before the team was abruptly cut at the end of the 2025 season.
Costa is in her senior year at Cal Poly and will arrive at Colorado State as a graduate transfer. She is currently training independently and swims six days a week for about an hour and a half. In addition, she lifts three to four times a week.
She has joined Cal Poly Swim Club but is only able to train with them a few times a week due to her class schedule. The swim club is not coached by a coach as it is instead being coached by the board this year, and the club program typically swims about 4,000 yards each practice with distance days going up to 5,000 yards occasionally. Joining the swim club has allowed her the opportunity to race which Costa says she is “glad to have the opportunity to race.”
Costa spoke of her commitment to Colorado State saying, “I am excited to get back to the grind at CSU and be a part of a group that will push me to my best! I truly love the sport, so just being able to compete again and see what I can accomplish is exciting.”
While a varsity athlete at Cal Poly, Costa was a member of the school record setting 200 medley relay. She swam the breaststroke leg.
In February 2025, Costa was 10th in the 100 breast in a season best 1:03.31 (1:03.14 in prelims) and 17th in the 200 breast (2:21.50) at the Big West Championships. Her 200 breast marked a personal best time. She also was 14th in the 50 free in a lifetime best 23.66 (23.58 in prelims).
Costa’s Best SCY Times:
100 breast: 1:03.02 200 breast: 2:21.50 50 free: 23.58The Colorado State women compete in the Mountain West Conference and were 7th out of 10 teams at the 2025 Mountain West Championships. Based on Costa’s best times, she would have made the Mountain West ‘C’ final in the 100 breast. Colorado State had one ‘B’ finalist and two ‘C’ finalists in the event.
