Day 17 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Guess who has a new running backs coach…
Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson has apparently filled one of the two major coaching vacancies with the hiring of Eric Studesville as the team’s new running backs coach. The Tribune’s Brad Biggs reports Studesville, who had been with the Miami Dolphins since 2017, is set to return to Chicago for a second stint with the team. Studesville coached with the Bears under Dave Wannstedt (from 1997-98) and Dick Jauron (1999-2000). We will have more on Studesville’s arrival later today. In the meantime, you can get some background on him by reading this post we did when he was floated as a potential RBs coach candidate. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images It’s not just that Eric Studesville has big shoes to fill in following Eric Bieniemy, who was a fine running backs coach before departing to rejoin Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid as the team’s new offensive coordinator. But it’s also that Studesville has big shoes to fill while maintaining the excellence that was Chicago’s running backs room last year. The ground game is at the heart of Ben Johnson’s identity. That group finished with the fifth-most rushing attempts, third-most rushing yards, and ninth-most ground scores. Bieniemy got a career year out of D’Andre Swift and helped Kyle Monangai grow from a seventh-round rookie to an important piece of the offensive puzzle by year’s end. I look forward to seeing how he molds the room.SUBSCRIBE TO THE BN BEARS PODCAST: Apple | Spotify | YouTube

— CHGO Bears (@CHGO_Bears) February 3, 2026 The NFL Honors 2026 will be announced starting at 8 p.m. CT Thursday night on NBC and Peacock. Ben Johnson is the only person on the Bears up for some hardware, as he is a finalist for the NFL’s Coach of the Year award. Johnson is facing some stiff competition with Mike Macdonald (Seahawks), Mike Vrabel (Patriots), Liam Coen (Jaguars), and Kyle Shanahan (49ers). You can check out the rest of the awards finalists here via Pro Football Talk. The Comeback Player of the Year competition is another stacked group. Patriots receiver Stefon Diggs, Lions edge defender Aidan Hutchinson, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, and 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey. Hence, I understand why Bears right guard Jonah Jackson wasn’t included in the mix. Jackson, who is celebrating a birthday today, went from playing 266 snaps in four games with the Los Angeles Rams to playing 1,133 snaps (98%) for Chicago and posting the 19th-best grade among 81 guards at PFF. Now, that is a comeback story! Jonah Jackson at Soldier Field. Mandatory Credit: Mike Dinovo-Imagn Images Also being announced tonight are the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026. If you cornered me and told me I had to pick five guys to go in this year, these would be my kicks: Kicker Adam Vinatieri, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, quarterback Drew Brees, wide receiver Torry Holt, and defensive menace Terrell Suggs. Leaving stars like Reggie Wayne, Luke Keuchly, Jason Witten off my hypothetical ballot was tough. Same can be said about trench monsters like Willie Anderson, Marshal Yanda, Jahri Evans, and Kevin Williams. Voting for the Hall of Fame is hard. Perhaps it is time to make some changes in that process. I, too, wish the Bears were set to play in Super Bowl LX:In San Francisco, working the Super Bowl, I have heard this from multiple people:"I wish the Bears were in the Super Bowl; they were so much fun all year, the game would be so much better."The Chicago Bears. What a time to be alive!
— Bill Zimmerman (@BillTZimmerman) February 5, 2026 The Chicago Bears being a team that people want to watch play football is new territory for me. For years, watching the Bears has been a slog. Even in good times, the formula was something tried and true from the middle of the 1980s. But Chicago’s football team appears to have stepped into modern times. What a time to be alive, indeed! Jeff Stoutland, the legendary Philadelphia Eagles offensive line coach, won’t be back with the team in 2026. Stoutland, who had been with the squad since 2013 as a hire by then-head coach Chip Kelly, announced his departure from the team via social media. This is a big loss for Philly, whose offensive line needs some work this offseason.
