ROCHESTER, N.Y. – If you think it’s been cold lately, buckle up (or bundle up, rather) for Saturday. A clipper system will bring us some snow Friday, and behind it comes the coldest temperatures of the season so far. We have a Yellow Alert issued for the dangerous cold.
For today, expect cold, cloudy conditions with lake flakes falling through the A.M. Little to no accumulation.
Temperatures rise into the balmy upper 20s tomorrow as warmer air is drawn up ahead of a clipper. That clipper arrives in the mid afternoon, bringing widespread snow and falling temperatures. Only a few inches of snow are expected area wide, but behind the system brutally cold winds going over the lake will kickstart a lake response that will last through all Saturday and through Sunday morning, tacking on more snow. Winds will also cause blowing snow which will reduce visibility and lead to snowdrifts. See the snowfall map below:
What will be more dangerous than the snow is the cold wind. Temperatures by themselves will be in the lower single digits at times… But with the wind, it could feel as low as -20 to -25 from Rochester down to the Finger Lakes respectively. That’s enough to cause frostbite in 10-15 minutes. If you need to go outside, you need to cover all exposed skin, including your face. Wear multiple layers with at least one insulating layer… But make sure none of the layers are cotton. Cotton wicks up moisture and makes you sweat, which can actually cause frostbite faster if your skin is in contact with the wind.
Bitterly cold temperatures and wind chills continue through Sunday morning. Our highs that day again will only be in the single digits.
Looking a bit ahead, we are finally starting to see signs that our cold snap that’s been going on for nearly 20 days is going to be shaken up. Many large scale weather patterns may align to make the jet stream a little more variable, meaning we might actually see some warmer air move into our area at times. Unfortunately, that often means some snowy and/or wet weather may be coming with it. We’ll continue to monitor the trends and will update you over the course of the week.
