The Tuscaloosa National Airport will receive $8.5 million in federal funding for renovations as part of a government appropriations bill passed by Congress Tuesday night.
The renovations, planned by Rep. Robert Aderholt of Alabama’s 4th Congressional District, will focus on the airport terminal, which coincides with the city’s plans to improve the airport and bring commercial airlines back to Tuscaloosa.
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox’s Elevate Tuscaloosa plan includes a runway extension to the airport with expected completion in August 2027.
In a press release, Aderholt said that the renovations would allow the airport “to modernize facilities, improve passenger experience and better serve travelers and businesses across west Alabama.”
Airport director Jeff Powell, airport director of TNA, said the airport had had broad support from its congressional delegation towards airport improvements.
“We’re very thankful for his championing of getting this through the appropriations process,” he said. “Very excited to continue to grow the airport, among other projects we’ve been prioritizing over the past five to 10 years.”
Aderholt also said in a post on Facebook that he received Community Project Funding for eight projects across Alabama’s 4th district, which includes parts of Tuscaloosa.
Lucy Allen, Aderholt’s press secretary, said the funding was an earmark, or a specific one-time federal funding request from members of Congress to their district.
UA students who are out-of-state typically fly into Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, about an hour from Tuscaloosa. Uber service from the airport to the University typically runs students around $110.
Alex House, associate director of communications for the University, said “improvements to the Tuscaloosa National Airport secured by Congressman Robert Aderholt will benefit the University community and improve quality of life and economic development in West Alabama.”
“This successful federal and local partnership comes from the dedication of local leadership to advancing our community, including city leaders, the Chamber of Commerce, and many others,” she said.
The airport ran commercial flights from 1950 to 1998 and now is mostly used for private planes and athletic charters. Local leaders have pushed for commercial flights to return to the airport in part to help University students with traveling to and from Tuscaloosa, with terminal renovations being a previous goal of Maddox’s.
Maddox said he was proud to partner with Aderholt and the entire congressional delegation to strengthen the “vital transportation hub” for the region.
“Thanks to Elevate Tuscaloosa, the airport has undergone transformative improvements over the past five years,” he said. “This investment ensures we can continue building a modern, connected future for West Alabama.”
