Oh, you better believe there are some frustrated Red Sox fans out there tonight. Quickly, the news (then the talk): The Boston Red Sox are reportedly signing infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa to a one-year deal tonight. Kiner-Falefa, 30, is a no-offense, good defensive utility infielder, who, as of this moment, appears to be one of the primary answers to which big infielder the Red Sox will add to their roster before the season. Yikes.
Here’s some context.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa to the Red Sox
Around this time last winter, the Red Sox had not one, but TWO bona fide third basemen in their organization, Alex Bregman and Rafael Devers, with real concern mounting over how they would accommodate both. Eventually, that consternation grew loud enough to force the Red Sox to trade their young (freshly extended on a mega deal) third baseman, Devers, to the Giants. A few months after that, Bregman opted out of his deal, and the Red Sox weren’t able to re-sign him, in part, because they didn’t actually believe he had the Cubs offer (to that extent) on the table. Ouch.
Now, for a while, Red Sox fans weren’t yet losing their minds. The team had been frequently connected to any number of big free agents and trade candidates from Bo Bichette (signed with the Mets) to Ketel Marte (reportedly not being traded), to Brendan Donovan (traded to the Mariners), to Kyle Schwarber (re-signed with the Phillies), Eugenio Suarez (signed with the Reds), Pete Alsono (signed with the Orioles), and others I’m probably forgetting in the moment. But they got none of the above, settling instead for Isiah Kiner-Falefa (at least, for now).
Theoretically, Marte is still out there, though the Diamondbacks have said they’re keeping him. There’s also Isaac Paredes and Matt Shaw/Nico Hoerner. But with Spring Training just around the corner, the likelihood of a trade that big is falling fast.
So that brings them from Bregman/Devers to rumors of a big move in free agency or trade to … Isiah Kiner-Falefa and his career 82 wRC+ (no shade to Kiner-Falefa, who has carved out a nice career for himself, but … yeah).
Ultimately, I don’t think this deal would prevent the Red Sox from making a move for Marte/Paredes/Shaw. Each of those players has significantly more upside, with varying degrees of control and projection ahead of them. But I don’t think it really provides any leverage in trade talk, either, as it feels more like a concession that they had to get somebody rather than this is the guy they actually want to take meaningful starts in 2026.
I can’t speak for the Astros/Paredes, but when it comes to the Cubs, we’ve made our take clear: They should absolutely not trade Nico Hoerner. And the only way they should even consider trading Matt Shaw is if (1) the Red Sox go over-the-top to include one of their top-100, big-league ready pitching prospects (Payton Tolle, Connelly Early), and (2) the Cubs are prepared to extend Hoerner.
Circling back to the reaction out of Boston … I don’t think Red Sox fans are being overly sensitive tonight. In fact, I think their reaction has been well-warranted. Yes, this offseason, the Red Sox have added some legitimate talent (Willson Contreras, Sonny Gray, and Ranger Suarez) to an already pretty good team. But that comes on the heels of fumbling star player after star player (don’t forget about Mookie Betts!) and an increasingly long track record of not spending enough in free agency to get the job done.
Couldn’t be my Cubs.
But, hey, who knows … the Red Sox don’t necessarily have to stop here. In fact, early word has them looking to do more. What that “more” is, with most of the big-name free agents gobbled up and declining chances for a trade, I don’t know. But it’s out there. Let’s see what our old pal, Craig Breslow, has up his sleeve.
