NIPSCO customers in Indiana protest higher energy bills ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Frustration is boiling over for some people who live in northwest Indiana as they protest higher energy bills amid concerns about rising costs.

During a rally outside of the Merrillville headquarters for Northern Indiana Public Service Company, or NIPSCO, customers called on the company to make energy more affordable.

Many of those taking part in the protest said their energy bills have doubled, and they’ve noticed an increase in their gas delivery charge.

“My bill went from $259 to $489,” said Leilani Suchanuk of Munster. “I’m waiting for my bill to come in now to see what it went up from last month.”

Pastor Leo Tatro of Chicago’s Restore Center helped organize a protest, telling NBC Chicago he plans to sleep outside NIPSCO’s HQ on Wednesday night.

“We can’t afford higher prices on groceries, higher prices on housing, higher prices on everything,” said Tatro. “There’s a vet here who said she’s going bankrupt, possibly over these bills.”

NIPSCO sent NBC Chicago a statement on their rate changes, saying in part:

“We understand that some customers are seeing higher-than-normal bills, and we want them to know we hear them. We know this is frustrating, and we care about what they’re experiencing. Our priority is to support customers, answer their questions and help them stay connected.”

Tatro said his protest aims to lead the company to making changes within the next week.

“We’re giving them a seven-day notice to turn back on for senior citizens who have a fixed income, the disabled people who are on a fixed income, they got to turn that on within seven days,” he said. “I want them to make energy affordable again within seven days. We need a plan in place. And we need for them to show the world they care.”

The company says recent cold temperatures have caused big changes to the price of energy delivery for both electricity and natural gas.

“Customers are not alone in seeing higher delivery charges right now,” the company said. “Because of the cold temperatures, customers across our service area are using more natural gas than they were in warmer months. For example, in January 2026, the average customer is using about 160 therms compared to just 14 therms in August 2025. That’s more than 11 times as much usage, and it has a significant impact on the bill.”

It’s unclear how long Tatro’s protest will last, but he’s aiming for rapid results for those who participated in the demonstration on Wednesday.

The company says it is committed to communicating with customers amid the challenging times.

“We’re committed to transparency outreach and helping customers understand and manage their bills. We appreciate our customers and want them to know assistance; payment options and the Budget Plan are available at NIPSCO.com,” the company said.
