ROCHESTER – If you spot icicles hanging from your roof, you might want to think twice before knocking them down.
A local roofing expert said icicles aren’t usually a problem unless they’re huge and in walkways because removing them can be risky.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t be knocking down icicles if I was a homeowner,” Paul Melnik, founder of Roofing Rochester, said. “I would let them melt.”
Melnik said removing icicles can be dangerous because of the injuries it can cause when they fall.
“The other part is you have to remember what’s underneath,” he said. “When the ice was falling, is it going to bounce off of the siding, or is it going to hit a window?”
He and his team remove icicles when dealing with ice dams, which form when melted snow refreezes on a roof. Melnik said that icicles hanging from the siding of homes or businesses can indicate water traveling inside, potentially causing damage.
“At that point, you should call the professionals,” he said. “You should get this treated because now when water gets inside your wall, it turns into mold.”
Melnik also mentioned avoiding rock salt for clearing roofs, as it can damage shingles and roofing materials.
