“The UNC-Duke rivalry is one of the most anticipated sporting events in the country,” Jackson said. “Scammers are trying to exploit that excitement to trick fans into purchasing fake tickets.”
The matchup in Chapel Hill, which is the longtime rivals’ first of the season, has already sold out on UNC and Duke’s ticket platforms. On resale platforms like SeatGeek, even the cheapest tickets are more than $450, with most going for more than $1,000 each.
Warning signs include “sob stories” like needing to resell the tickets because of a death in the family or a similar tragedy. The North Carolina Department of Justice noted this is a common tactic to gain a buyer’s trust.
Scammers also tend to arrange the transactions over peer-to-peer payment platforms like Venmo or Zelle, the statement said, where it may be more difficult for the buyer to seek a refund or dispute the charge.
The NCDOJ urged those seeking to attend the game to stick to reputable ticketing platforms and use a credit card so they can dispute the charge if fraud occurs. Buyers who believe they may be the target of a scam should contact their Consumer Protection Division at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or submit an online complaint.
“We want everyone to enjoy the game, not lose their hard-earned money to a scam,” Jackson said.
