PALM BEACH, Fla. — The man who attempted to assassinate President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago golf course in 2024 was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday.
Prosecutors wrote in a sentencing memorandum that the man, Ryan Routh, remains “totally unrepentant.” Routh represented himself at trial, but the court-appointed attorney who helped him prepare for his sentencing hearing said he will appeal.
“I think we have a great federal judiciary in this country,” said Martin Roth, Routh’s attorney.
“I think the judge may have mistakenly applied the federal crime of terrorism enhancement, and that will be probably the leading issue on appeal. I will be filing a notice of appeal in this case,” Routh’s attorney added.
Routh was arrested in September 2024 after a Secret Service agent spotted him hiding in the shrubbery near the fifth hole of Trump’s golf club.
