The Opening Ceremony for the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics may not be until Friday, but many events actually start before then, with competition kicking off Wednesday.
“This is the biggest winter games ever,” NBC 5’s Alex Maragos, reporting from Milan Wednesday said. “There are 116 events in 16 sports, and it all starts today. Not a long list of sports today, but it’s go time for a handful of Olympians.”
The first events will be alpine skiing, which begins training Wednesday, luge and curling. Ski jumping, snowboarding, figure skating and ice hockey will also kick off before the official start of the Games.
Many of the events this week may take place while fans are sleeping. Here’s a look at which events take place this week as the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics begin.
When do the 2026 Olympics start?
The first Olympic events begin on Feb. 4, but the Opening Ceremony is set for Feb. 6. Live coverage of the event starts at 1 p.m. CT and is expected to last three hours.
The first medals will be awarded starting Feb. 7.
The Games will continue until the Closing Ceremony on Feb. 22.
