ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The School Without Walls will hold its fourth annual blood drive on Wednesday, which also aims to raise awareness for sickle cell disease.
The student-led event started after a School Without Walls staff member who lost two their sons to sickle cell disease. The event focuses on education and increasing blood donations, which are critical for people living with the disease.
The blood drive runs from 1 to 7 p.m. It’s open to the public. Walk-ins are welcome, but you can also schedule an appointment with the Red Cross here. The drive aims to collect at least 19 units of blood, building on last year’s total of 24.
The event will feature a Sickle Cell Awareness program from 4 to 7 p.m. Student presentations, medical experts, and local organizations will share information on the impact of sickle cell disease and recent advances in treatment. There will also be handmade student artwork, crafts, and baked goods on sale to benefit the Red Cross.
Sickle cell disease happens when red blood cells become hard, sticky, and C-shaped like a sickle. This keeps them from efficiently carrying oxygen and they can get stuck in small blood vessels.
