What Does the Bulls’ Latest Trade Mean For Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu Before the NBA Trade Deadline? ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Chicago Bulls made a second trade this week on Tuesday afternoon. The three-team deal, involving the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons, brings guards Jaden Ivey and Mike Conley Jr. to Chicago. Now-former Bulls shooting guard Kevin Huerter and recently-acquired center Dario Saric are heading to Detroit. Minnesota gains a Pistons pick.

Yes, the Chicago Bulls just acquired two more guards.

K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network, reports the Bulls are set to “remain active” before the deadline. Which begs question(s) about the immediate future of the Bulls’ backcourt between now and the NBA’s trade deadline, which is on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT.

What does this mean for the current Bulls guards being named most frequently in trade rumors: Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu?

The Bulls’ Next Move(s)?

According to NBA cap expert Yossi Gozlan, Chicago will produce an $18 million trade exception as part of the deal.

The 38-year-old Conley has an expiring $10.8 million contract, which gives the Bulls some roster flexibility. Chicago may yet waive the past-his-prime guard if it can’t find a home for his salary.

But Ivey, the fifth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Purdue, is an intriguing piece who is still just 23. The 6-foot-3 combo guard will become a restricted free agent this summer. So if any team offers him an exorbitant deal, the Bulls will be able to equal that sum to keep him around.

Still, we need to get practical about this: right now, Ivey becomes the Bulls’ fifth-best guard, behind incumbents White, Dosunmu, Josh Giddey and Tre Jones. He’s Giddey’s age, and only about two years younger than the others. So how much upside does he really possess over any of the other Bulls guards?

In 33 healthy contests this season, Ivey has been averaging a career-low 8.2 points on .4500/.372/.789 shooting splits, 2.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 0.5 steals in 16.8 minutes a night. He’s not much of a defender, but has upside as a ball-dominant scorer. In terms of skill overlap, White feels like the closest Ivey analog.

Adding a fifth young guard does feel superfluous.

The Bulls clearly want to take a flier on Ivey, and Brian Windhorst said on ESPN Tuesday afternoon that he believes the Bulls will make an effort to extend Ivey this summer.

Thus, it does seem that Chicago might be looking to make a subsequent move (or more?) to offload White and/or Dosunmu before they reach unrestricted free agency in the offseason. Dosunmu will likely be pretty affordable this summer (SB Nation’s Ricky O’Donnell projects him to make something in the range of $15 million annually), although it seems that White is seeking a massive raise the Bulls may have find distasteful.

White’s Future in Chicago

Calf tightness has limited White — the longest-tenured Bull — to just 28 healthy bouts this season. He’s improved his shooting stroke lately, and now is averaging 18.5 points on .439/.350/.810 shooting splits, along with 4.8 dimes (against 3.0 turnovers), 3.5 boards and 0.7 swipes per.

Giddey may have been the top All-Star contender on the 24-26 Bulls this season, but White is probably the better player. He’s a great three-level scorer and could be a solid secondary facilitator.

The 6-foot-4 swingman has been floated as a trade candidate for the Pistons, Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves thus far. Windhorst openly wondered about Minnesota not acquiring White in this specific deal on ESPN after the trade was reported.

Dosunmu’s Future in His Hometown

Dosunmu isn’t quite the ball handler or off-ball scorer White is, but he’s a stronger defender. The University of Illinois and Morgan Park product has been enjoying his best pro season so far this year, and could hold appeal with a lot of clubs looking for two-way help.

Through 44 healthy games this year (nine starts), the 26-year-old has been averaging a career-most 15 points on .515/.449/.854 shooting splits, plus 3.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 0.7 swipes a night.

Dosunmu has been suggested as a potential trade chip for the New York Knicks or Timberwolves as well. He could also make sense as a fit with Houston.
