“It’s Not Fun”: Nikola Vučević Sounds Off on Bulls’ NEED for Change ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

An ugly situation has a way of bringing out the ugly in all of us. And when the Chicago Bulls lose a game by nearly 50 points, Nikola Vučević isn’t afraid to call it exactly what it is.

The biggest gripe Bulls fans have with this team is its complete lack of direction. Perpetually stuck in the play-in conversation, never bad enough to bottom out and never good enough to rise to the top. They’re punished for that mediocrity, no real contention for an NBA title, no top-three picks to change the trajectory. Just pure mid.

And that’s a cycle no franchise wants to fall into, let alone stay trapped in. Yet the Chicago Bulls have shown little inclination to choose a lane. With the trade deadline just days away, someone was bound to make a plea for help.

Ironically enough, that someone was Nikola Vučević.

Nikola Vučević Wants a Change at the Trade Deadline

Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, in a postgame interview with Vučević, managed to pull a sound bite that felt equal parts bitter and frustrated.

“I think there are certain things that this team needs to take the next step,” said Vooch. “But we’ll see what happens. If nothing happens, then it’s on us to try and figure it out and get there. You know, it’s not fun when you’re in the same position year after year, especially when you can’t get out of that play-in, when you get stuck… I think this team does need some things that can definitely help us move forward and take that next step.”

And it means something, especially coming from Nikola Vučević. He’s been the change fans have been calling for. The one player on the roster who actually held value, and he knew it. He’s addressed trade rumors more times than the Bulls have made the playoffs.

It’s always seemed inevitable that Chicago would eventually have to maximize value, and to their credit, they’ve been blessed with players who’ve actually performed well. The problem is, they’ve never fully capitalized on that value.

But this season will be different, right?

Chicago Bulls Eastern Conference finish each season since 2015-16:'15-16: 9th'16-17: 8th'17-18: 13th'18-19: 13th'19-20: 11th'20-21: 11th'21-22: 6th'22-23: 10th'23-24: 9th'24-25: 9thThey are currently 9th in the East… again. pic.twitter.com/ODzfa03F47

I mean, they did make a solid move just days ago, two second-round picks and Dario Šarić. That’s something. I just hope it’s a teaser and not the whole movie.

But Vučević has never been afraid to be the guy who starts the uncomfortable conversation—something we’ve seen multiple times this season.

The holes on this roster are obvious. Defense is the biggest one. Size is the other. And when Chicago gets unlucky with the few players they do have in those roles not being available or playing consistently, those holes turn into craters. Losing games and addressing those issues in the draft or the offseason is one thing. Ignoring them altogether is another—and that’s how this front office has handled it.

Vučević echoed those same thoughts in that press conference, pointing out the need for more size and athleticism. In a league that’s trending toward bigger, more physical lineups, the fact that Chicago has a 5’7″ guard as one of its better rebounders is a glaring red flag. Sorry, Yuki.

That’s why when I was suggesting offseason moves, it’s always, always the tall athletes.

What Could A Change Look Like?

Coby White is the player generating the most interest on the market, but not enough to meet Chicago’s asking price. Teams like the Timberwolves and the Rockets have circled around White, but I wouldn’t want pure draft compensation from two franchises that are perennial contenders. A return involving a player like Tari Eason, or Rob Dillingham and Joan Beringer, would make me, and every Bulls fan, pretty happy.

Coby White continues to show off very serious scoring + playmaking pop…95th percentile O-DPM this season. Big time impact. Intrigued to see if he stays a Bull or what the potential trade package is. pic.twitter.com/1QeBNMQrui

Any kind of return for Zach Collins and Kevin Huerter would be ideal. This is where late first-round picks start to sound real nice. As for Vučević, unfortunately the market has dried up. At that point, maybe you re-sign him on a very team-friendly deal and try again next year.

Ayo Dosunmu has shown more than enough to warrant an extension or a strong trade package. But if Chicago lets him walk for nothing? Then we riot.

And then there’s the elephant in the room: changes to the coaching staff and the front office. You start at the top and don’t look back. Chicago needs, and deserves, a reset. Being stuck in a rut is frustrating, and now it’s clearly seeping into the locker room.

Josh Giddey is dealing with injuries, and it feels like he was rushed back in an attempt to salvage a hopeless season, only to re-aggravate something that kept him out for a month.

Josh Giddey (hamstring) listed out for Tuesday.

And that’s exactly why change always starts at the top.

Take the hint, make moves and get changes in the door AK. It’s genuinely high time!
