Hosting the Olympics marks a tremendous feat for any city – and country.
So it’s no surprise host cities go all out, often constructing new venues and facilities specifically for the Games.
But what happens when the Olympics end?
After the medals are awarded, athletes return home and spectators shift focus to the next Olympics, the costly infrastructure left behind can be largely unused – forgotten.
And that can be the case for years.
