LOS ANGELES — The 68th Annual Grammy Awards was full of plenty of musical performances, with Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, and Jelly Roll taking home some of the biggest honors. But Rochester also took center stage on Sunday.
Chuck Mangione honored
The Grammys honored Chuck Mangione, the legendary Rochester jazz musician who died in July at age 84, during the In Memoriam segment. Reba McEntire, Brandy Clark, and Lukas Nelson performed the song “Trailblazer” to honor the influential musicians who have died in the past year, including Mangione.
Other late musicians honored included Ozzy Osbourne, D’Angelo, Roberta Flack, Brett James, Alan Bergman, Sheila Jordan, Roy Ayers, Jimmy Cliff, and Malcolm Jamal-Warner.
Mangione earned 14 Grammy nominations, winning two, over his career. His album “Feels So Good” became one of the most successful jazz records ever produced, according to the Rochester Music Hall of Fame. After his death, News10NBC spoke with Mangione’s family about what made him so dedicated to supporting other musicians in Rochester. Grammy winners with Eastman connections
Two faculty members and multiple graduates of the Eastman School of Music took home Grammys. Sunday marked the third Grammy win for both Sara Gazarek, associate professor of jazz voice, and Paul O’Dette, professor of lute, at the school.
Gazarek won for the award for Best Arrangement of Instruments and Vocals for her work on the piece “Big Fish”. O’Dette won the award for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album after serving as the conductor for the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra. Here are the awards that went to Eastman graduates:
Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance: For “Dennehy: Land Of Winter”. It featured Alan Pierson as artistic director and conductor. Best Engineered Album, Classical: For “Cerrone: Don’t Look Down”. It featured percussionist Jonathan Allen. Best Opera Recording: For “Heggie: Intelligence (world premiere recording)”. It featured Libretto by Gene Scheer. Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella: For “Super Mario Praise Break”. It featured music from the 8-Bit Big Band, including Jared Schonig on drums. Best Orchestral Performance: For “Messiaen: Turangalîla-Symphonie”.
