OAKLAND — When he was just 3 years old, Stacy Tidwell IV’s father was shot and killed in a parking lot behind his North Oakland home.
At around 10 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2025, Tidwell suffered a similar fate. He was fatally shot by someone in a group of masked robbers, after police say Tidwell and his cousin were set up near Fremont High, about eight miles east from where Tidwell’s dad was killed.
Authorities are still investigating Tidwell’s death, but last week they arrested a suspect, 18-year-old Marjee “Lil Jae” Martin, who has been charged with murder and two counts of second-degree robbery. Police say they’re not sure who fired the fatal shot but found evidence that Martin put the plan in motion by arranging to meet the cousins in East Oakland for a purported opiate painkiller drug deal which he intended to be a robbery the entire time.
Tidwell’s cousin drove him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police later found text messages between Martin and Tidwell’s cousin where they arranged to meet in the area, according to police. Martin was arrested in St. Louis and is being extradited to the Bay Area, authorities said.
Just 16 months before his death, in August 2024, Tidwell was nearly killed in a shooting that occurred near 8th and Center streets in West Oakland. A man identified by police as Zaire Campbell shot Tidwell and two other people, but Tidwell suffered the most serious injury of the bunch. He was hospitalized in the ICU and intubated with multiple gunshot wounds. Campbell was charged with attempted murder, court records show.
In 2006, the San Francisco Chronicle featured Tidwell in an article about a Sankofa Academy kindergarten class where teachers were trying something new: home visits with students to form deeper connections with kids entering early education. The article notes pictures of Tidwell’s father, Stacy Tidwell III, around their home and how he still “looms large” despite his homicide three years earlier.
Tidwell III was shot multiple times on the 900 block of 55th Street in Oakland, according to media reports. It is unclear if police ever arrested a suspect but if they did, it wasn’t covered by the local press at the time.
The Chronicle reporter asked Stacy Tidwell IV’s mother what she hoped for her son, who was just 6 years old at the time.
“That he go to Harvard and get a doctorate,” she replied.
“Oh honey, I love your dream,” said the teacher.
