Denver Broncos CEO Greg Penner is a breath of fresh air when it comes to end of the year press conferences compared to other owners around the league. On Wednesday, he shared his debrief of the 14-3 season that saw the team put themselves back into contention.
Denver Broncos CEO Greg Penner pleased with season, team mentality is not satisifed
Since taking over as part of the Walton Penner Family Ownership Group, Denver Broncos CEO Greg Penner has helped make sweeping changes on the football and business side to put the team back into prestige and contention after nearly 10 years of struggles since they won Super Bowl 50.
For Penner, he’s grown so much on the football side, learning the ins and outs of delegating and trusting Sean Payton and GM George Paton when it comes to football decisions. One thing Penner acknowledged was the rebirth of home-field advantage in the Mile High City, where the stadium shook louder this season than it ever has been.
“The other thing I would say is to Broncos Country: A huge, ‘Thank you,’” Penner said. “I think you all saw it. We really re-established a strong home-field advantage this year, and our fans were just incredible. The main message is that we are not satisfied. We know that we have a lot of work to do. We have obviously made a lot of progress in the last four years, but we are going to work our tails off this offseason and come in next year ready to go.”
The job is never finished. A 14-3 regular season marks a franchise best, and with the team coming off a playoff win against the Buffalo Bills, and being a few plays shy of a Super Bowl appearance, there are things to build off of, but Penner and the organization aren’t satisfied with just appearing. The expectation going forward is to win a Super Bowl, and that raises the stakes.
Broncos GM George Paton and HC Sean Payton nearing contract extensions?
The progress the Broncos have made has been incredible since George Paton and Sean Payton have paired up. Together, they’ve become a powerful GM-HC duo, and they have a chance to continue to build something special with this team Paton envisioned as a sleeping giant when he took over as GM in 2021.
Paton’s contract is nearing its expiration, and he’s in line for a contract, as is Payton. Penner
“Well, first of all, I’d say that the two of them, we’d love to have both of them here long term,” Penner said. “I think the partnership they’ve created and how they work together, it’s very complementary. In terms of their contracts, those are things that we’ll always deal with on a personal basis in private and take that as it comes.”
With some of the changes we’ve already seen from Denver this offseason, locking up Paton and Payton for the long-term is crucial.
Broncos in good position after dead cap debacle
The Russell Wilson dead cap is finally off the books, and now the Broncos are poised to be aggressive when free agency begins on March 11.
Denver ate nearly $55M in dead cap in 2024 and the remaining $32-33M this season. Despite that, the Broncos have strategically built a roster with some key veterans and a variety of talented young players, accelerating what many thought would be a long-term rebuild.
One thing Payton and Penner have expressed is that they weren’t going to use the dead cap as an excuse and that they were going to find a way to win despite that. They did just that. In 2024, the Broncos won 10 games and had their first playoff appearance in nine years. In 2025, they won 14 games and beat the Bills in the playoffs before falling short against the Patriots.
Now, with an offseason ahead of them and more flexibility from a salary cap standpoint, the Broncos will be strategically aggressive.
“In terms of free agency, I always look at it as… I get a little worried about just the pure phrase of ‘aggressive,’ because you can be aggressive, but you want to do it in a smart way,” Penner said. “So again, we’ll be willing to spend if we see something that, we see a player that we think is going to add a lot of value here. We’ll definitely take an aggressive approach, but we’re also not just going to bring in somebody that’s not right for this locker room. There’ll be a lot of factors that we consider. I’d say we’ll be opportunistically aggressive.”
The NFL announced the expected salary cap space to be around $301.2M or $305.7M, marking the largest operating salary cap in league history. Let’s see what Penner, Paton, and Payton can do.
