ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Hundreds of people took a chilly dip at Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte for the 2026 Rochester Polar Plunge. The event, held at noon on Sunday, aimed to support Special Olympics New York.

Special Olympic athlete and participant Garrett Royter expressed his appreciation for the turnout. “I do a lot of different sports, so I even do this on, every February, I’m the mascot being the polar bear. So I enjoy it. I just, I have a soft spot for these people going in,” said Royter.

Royter has participated in the plunge since 2021 but warned it might not be suitable for everyone. “If you’re not playing with, how they say in cards, a full deck, you shouldn’t be doing this. When this temperature and the wind drops, it’s not for you,” he said.

For Briana Jordain, it was her first time participating. “Once you get in and you get out, you’re warm from the adrenaline, but going in you’re freezing the whole time. It was so cold,” said Jordain.

The Greater Rochester area supports more than 40 Special Olympic events and over 3,500 athletes each year. Sunday’s Polar Plunge was part of the annual Lakeside Winter Celebration at Ontario Beach Park.
