Alabama Club Field Hockey builds community through student-run leadership ...Middle East

Alabama Club Field Hockey might not draw the same crowds as varsity sports, but behind the scenes, the student-run organization runs with the same dedication, structure and competitive spirit.

Built entirely by students, the club provides an opportunity for players to continue competing in the National Field Hockey League while also balancing their academics and campus life.

“Alabama Club Field Hockey is a student-run organization built on love for the sport,” said club President Carmen Rutters. “Our mission is to give students the opportunity to compete, grow, and stay connected to field hockey while building a strong and supportive team.”

Unlike other sports programs, the responsibility of sustaining the team falls largely on its executive board. From organizing practices to coordinating travel and managing finances, leadership plays a critical role in keeping the program running.

“Our executives handle everything from organizing practices and travel to managing finances and communication,” Rutters said. “Players and officers work together to keep the program running while balancing academics and other commitments at the university.”

Funding remains one of the team’s biggest challenges. Travel and tournament expenses can quickly add up, requiring careful planning and budgeting throughout the season. Rutters said the team relies on a combination of the University’s support, player dues and fundraising to stay competitive.

“A lot of work happens behind the scenes,” said vice president Ella Kelley. “Beyond helping run practices and supporting our president, I spend a lot of time coordinating our entire season. From planning all our games and tournaments to coordinating fundraisers, there is a lot of extra work that might not be recognized.”

Despite the logistical demands, Kelley said the team culture makes the effort worthwhile.

“Our team dynamic is awesome,” Kelley said. “Everyone is there to have fun while still being serious and competitive. We love traveling together, and we’ve built a close bond that truly feels like a family.”

That sense of community has been especially meaningful for new players adjusting to college life. Freshman Caroline Corgan said joining the team helped her find familiarity during her first year at Alabama.

“I’ve been playing field hockey my whole life and I wanted to keep that up at school,” Corgan said. “Getting started at school it helped me to have something to occupy me. It’s also super nice to have a little piece of home here.”

Beyond athletics, Corgan said the team introduced her to a “good community of girls” she likely would not have met otherwise.

For Rutters, continuing the legacy of past leadership has been a central focus of her presidency.

“Following many talented presidents, I’ve been able to continue the program because of the strong foundation they built,” Rutters said. “Because of previous dedication I am able to continue to make field hockey and our team more well known.”

As the season continues, Alabama Club Field Hockey remains committed to fostering both competitive growth and a supportive environment for its players.

For students considering joining a club sport, Corgan said the benefits extend well beyond competition. “Do it,” she said. “It’s such a good way to get started on campus.”
