First Alert Weather: Cold wind chills lead into Monday morning, but 20-degree weather is on the way ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Most lake snow has moved out of western New York Sunday evening with the exception of light, shallow lake effect flakes towards Oswego County. The rest of us will see partly cloudy skies overnight with wind chills hovering around 0 degrees and winds out of the west/southwest between 10 to 15 mph.

Wind chills will dip to -5 to -10 degrees heading into Monday morning. Surface collision of air may force a light band of lake effect snow north (along the south shore of Lake Ontario) and far east of Rochester into Wayne, northern Cayuga and Oswego Counties Monday morning. The rest of us will be lucky to get a few stray flakes at the most, so measurable accumulations are not likely for Rochester. Any lingering snow in the lower atmosphere will dry up during the day on Monday as a small region of high pressure wedges its way into western New York. This will cause brief clearing, some sun, and air temperatures to reach near 25 degrees in the afternoon. Wind chills will also be much more tolerable in the mid-teens. You can expect a slight breeze on Monday out of the west/southwest between 15 and 20 mph.

Although we will catch a break this week from temperatures below 20 degrees, we will see at least a 20-30% chance of snow each day of this coming week. Late Monday night, our next clipper system will move in bringing some lighter widespread snow showers into Tuesday (60%). As of right now, accumulations are expected to stay around a couple inches at the most for Rochester come Wednesday morning.

The rest of Wednesday and Thursday will bring lake effect out behind the clipper which may tack on another couple of inches through Thursday. Again, at this time, it appears that this clipper will likely deliver only minor accumulations.

Our next sizeable system moves through Friday night bringing the potential for widespread snow. Right now, it does not appear to be a major snowfall event, but I would expect a handful of inches between this system and the lake effect on the back end that is expected to continue through the weekend. It is too early to talk about snowfall totals, but this is a system we will be monitoring through the week and provide updates on snow totals as we get closer.
