Day 14 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Pat yourself on the back if you successfully made it through January. Just don’t hurt yourself while doing so.
I’ve been thinking about what the duties of being the offensive coordinator for Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson entails, which brought me back to this Declan Doyle quote from his introductory press conference last February:“Basically, I have to do that work that (Johnson’s) not gonna have time to do, and he’s going to have to be able to trust me that I’m gonna give him the correct information he needs as a decision maker. And really throughout the week, streamlining the teaching progression to the players, making sure that everything is built around them. Myself, Ben and the rest of the staff, we’re not gonna take a snap this year. We have to make sure that our players understand their toolbox, so they can go out and play fast and play at a high level.”

With that in mind, I’m not sure that someone like Antwaan Randle El or J.T. Barrett is the right fit for that gig right now. As position coaches, those guys already have a lot on their respective plates. Why add more responsibilities if it isn’t necessary? Given what Doyle said about his duties at this time last year, I feel as if the next Bears OC will be someone like Doyle — an up-and-comer who is down to get dirty and do a ton of grunt work. It looks like a thankless job. But the Bears can point to Doyle as an example of what can happen when you do the gig to the best of your ability. If you were hoping that Tanner Engstrand would land on his feet in Chicago as Johnson’s new OC, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter/X) that Engstrand is joining the Atlanta Falcons as the team’s passing game coordinator. Engstrand joins new Falcons Head Coach Kevin Stefanski, who appears to be building the type of staff he wasn’t allowed to construct while with the Cleveland Browns. Alyssa Barbieri (Bears Wire) includes Detroit Lions Offensive Line Coach Hank Fraley as a possible candidate to replace Declan Doyle as Chicago’s offensive coordinator. There was a time when there was some belief that Fraley would follow Johnson from the Lions to the Bears before that idea went belly up. Perhaps things could be different this time around? Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema has a list of 10 players whose stock will rise now that the latest installment of the college football all-star showcase is in the books. Names that intrigue me because they play positions the Bears could stand to fill this offseason: Oklahoma linebacker Owen Heinecke, Arizona State offensive tackle Max Iheanachor, Texas A&M offensive tackle Demetrius Crownover, Illinois edge defender Gabe Jacas, and Michigan edge defender Derrick Moore. I’ll take it as a good sign that defensive linemen seem to be generating a ton of buzz at this point of the pre-draft cycle. ESPN’s Peggy Kunsinski is still trying to make sense of the Bears not getting compensatory draft picks after watching Ian Cunningham leave to become Falcons GM:Someone needs to explain this to me. The #ChicagoBears won’t get compensatory picks for losing Ian Cunningham to the Falcons as GM. But, Atlanta’s Matt Ryan says “the GM role is going to be exactly the same as what it’s been here before”. And when the man before Cunningham – Terry Fontentot – was hired, the Saints received compensatory picks for losing him to Atlanta. But because of the addition of Ryan’s new job title, no compensation even though he’ll be doing the exact same job as the GM before him? This does’t sound right?

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) February 1, 2026 The initial release of the Pro Bowl Games roster had three Bears — left guard Joe Thuney, center Drew Dalman, and safety Kevin Byard III. Cornerback Nahshon Wright has since joined the group as an alternate. I’m a little bummed that quarterback Caleb Williams isn’t getting in on the festivities, but it isn’t that big of a deal. His time as a Pro Bowl quarterback will come in due time. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio believes it is time to put an end to the Pro Bowl Games. There is a part of me that agrees with his sentiment because the event just doesn’t have the type of draw that other all-star games like the ones MLB, NHL, and even the NBA put on in their respective sports. However, there is probably a path to something that is good for players, fun for fans, and (sigh) profitable for the league and its broadcast partners. To be clear, I don’t care about profit margins for the NFL or its broadcast affiliates. However, I am not stubborn enough to ignore that plays a large part in if the Pro Bowl (or Pro Bowl Games) will live on. Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson told the USA Today that that the team would have done better with Sam Darnold at quarterback in 2025. “Everyone knows the difficulty of the quarterback position this year, how we were dealt it,” Jefferson said. “But having a quarterback that already had a season under his belt with us, knew the plays, knew the playbook, knew the players, throwing to me, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, all these guys, I definitely feel like we would have done better. But it is what it is, it’s on to newer and better things.” More in-depth reporting on the Minnesota Vikings situation after the dismissal of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah as their GM from The Athletic and ESPN. This would be chaotic for all of the worst reasons, so I’m glad that JJ Watt is publicly calling it out:Imagine the levels of chaos when a ref comes on the mic 3 minutes after a Pick-6 and says “the ruling on the field was INT and TD by the defense. However, after further review, replay officials have decided to throw a flag for roughing the passer.” t.co/GXU3BVtsqQ
