Several Chicago-area athletes are heading to Italy to represent the U.S. in the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics.
Team USA will have 232 athletes on its roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics, and eight of them are from the Chicago area. Several more are from the Midwest.
Representing in sports like hockey and speed skating, there are several veteran athletes and newcomers. Some stars will even be setting records with their appearance.
Here’s a look at the local athletes and their sports:
Women’s Ice Hockey
Women’s ice hockey is the sport with the most Chicago-area athletes.
Hilary Knight, Kendall Coyne Schofield, Abbey Murphy and Tessa Janecke are among the notable names on Team USA’s 23-player women’s ice hockey roster, which includes 20 skaters and three goaltenders.
Knight, 36, who grew up in Lake Forest, will set a U.S. women’s hockey record for most Winter Games appearances after winning gold in 2018 and three silver medals. The Seattle Torrent captain previously announced these will be her final Winter Games, though she plans to continue her PWHL career.
Forward Coyne Schofield, a Palos Heights native, will both be competing in her fourth Winter Games, and Murphy, of Evergreen Park, was also a member of the silver medal-winning 2022 team.
Janecke, of Orangeville, Illinois, is among the newcomers — and the only Chicago-area athlete on the hockey roster to be competing in her first Olympics.
Ski Jumping
Suburban ski jumper Kevin Bickner was the only Chicago-area athlete to make Team USA for ski jumping.
The Wauconda, Illinois, native will make his third Olympic appearance, becoming one of three Americans to jump in Predazzo, Italy.
Bickner previously competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. He briefly retired following the 2022 games, citing burnout and poor performance.
He returned to the sport after Team USA formed a partnership with the Norwegians to help improve American performance. Team USA has not won a medal in ski jumping since 1924.
The 29-year-old grew up jumping at Norge Ski Club in Fox River Grove, Illinois, which has minted several Olympians, including Michael Glasder, Casey Larson and Patrick Gasienica.
Speed Skating
Speed skating is another Olympic sport with Chicago-area representation.
Ethan Cepuran, who hails from Glen Ellyn, Emery Lehman, from Oak Park, and Sarah Warren, from Willowbrook, were all named to Team USA’s roster.
Cepuran and Lehman were recently part of the men’s team pursuit squad that beat their own existing world record in a time of 3:32.49. They were also part of the group that captured a bronze medal in the team pursuit in Beijing in 2022, leaving Cepuran and company looking for a much bigger prize as they head to Italy.
Warren, 29, will be competing in her first Olympic Games.
