City officials and the Carlsbad Municipal Water District declared a local emergency on Saturday “to protect public safety and expedite repairs” to a water main and roadway.
According to a news release, the action regarding the intersection of Carlsbad Village Drive and El Camino Real was taken to address impacts on surrounding roads following a water main break Saturday morning.
Crews were sent to the site to assess the damage, close streets and keep residents from accessing the area.
“After review and further assessment from utilities and roads experts, it has been determined that more extensive repairs are needed to safely reopen closed traffic lanes,” the city said. “Due to this area serving as a high-traffic intersection, declaring a local emergency allows city officials to begin the needed road repair work immediately.”
Repairs, according to the city, are underway and will take approximately 36 hours to finish, and added that other infrastructure repairs may take more time.
“In the meantime, pedestrians, bike riders and drivers will need to use alternate routes and may need to account for additional travel time,” officials said.
Geoff Patnoe, Carlsbad city manager and Carlsbad Municipal Water District executive manager, said he and other officials “realize this is a high-traffic area for our residents and surrounding communities and want to be sure we are doing everything possible to expedite these repairs.”
Officials said the city and the water district “will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as more information becomes available.” Residents may check the city’s website and social media accounts.
The emergency declaration will remain until the city council meeting on Feb. 10, officials said. Council members, who also serve as the water district’s board of directors, will then consider whether to continue the declaration.
Should the declaration remain, council members would need to review it at every regular meeting, according to the city.
