Liam Rosenior hasn’t been in charge at Stamford Bridge for long, but he has already made Chelsea history.
His players had looked down and out at half-time of this meeting with West Ham. Boos rang out as they trudged off the pitch, two goals down at home to relegation-threatened opposition.
This was the 57th time that Chelsea had trailed by 2+ goals at half-time of a Premier League game, and they were winless in their 56 previous. For the first time in Premier League history, they have won a match after being two goals behind at the break.
And they did it in dramatic fashion. They were dreadful in the first half, played off the park by a team whose future may well be in the Championship, but a string of substitutions from Rosenior changed the game.
Nuno Espírito Santo’s side came into this one chasing a third straight Premier League win, but even with renewed confidence following victories over Tottenham and Sunderland, few would have predicted how well they started.
There were some extenuating circumstances. Rosenior made seven changes from the team who started in Wednesday’s comeback win at Napoli that secured their position in the last 16 of the Champions League, perhaps with Tuesday’s EFL Cup second leg at Arsenal in mind. That game also meant the hosts had only a couple of days to prepare for West Ham’s visit, while Nuno had a full week on the training ground with his players.
But even so, at home to a team that has been stuck in the relegation zone since early December, there was no explaining how poor they were. They went behind inside seven minutes, when Aaron Wan-Bissaka shrugged off Alejandro Garnacho, who had a particularly torrid first half, and found Jarrod Bowen. The winger then curled an inviting cross towards goal, and teammate Pablo’s attempt to get on the end of it left goalkeeper Robert Sánchez wrongfooted. The ball bounced past him and nestled inside the far post.
From there, West Ham grew in confidence, and they punished Chelsea time and again down that same flank. They doubled their lead following another move down their right, after long ball found Bowen, who then played Wan-Bissaka in and he pulled the ball back for Crysencio Summerville on the penalty spot to slam the ball into the net.
In his 223rd appearance, Wan-Bissaka had recorded 2+ goal involvements in a Premier League game for the very first time.
West Ham went in at the break two goals up, having had a whopping 56.8% of their attacking touches down their right. Loud boos met Anthony Taylor’s half-time whistle.
The home fans weren’t happy and, crucially, nor was Rosenior. He made a triple substitution, replacing Alejandro Garnacho, Jorrel Hato and Benoît Badiashile with João Pedro, Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana. All three substitutes played key roles in transforming the game.
First, just 12 minutes into the second half, Fofana put a wonderful cross onto the head of João Pedro, who added to his incredible, match-winning brace at Napoli with a well-taken header to halve the deficit. Then, 13 minutes later, Cucurella turned in from close range after Liam Delap had hit the bar. Two different substitutes had scored in the same Premier League game for Chelsea for the first time since September 2022 (also against West Ham).
West Ham centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo missed a golden chance to win it from close range with five minutes left, and he was made to pay for it.
João Pedro had another, even more telling contribution to come. Racing towards goal in the 90th minute, the Brazilian turned down the opportunity to shoot, instead pulling the ball back brilliantly for Enzo Fernández to slam in a history-making winner.
There was to be more drama as tempers flared late on and Todibo was sent off, but that was it for the goals as Chelsea saw out a huge win.
Given where they were at the break and their record after going two goals down, this was an unexpected result that will give the players an enormous boost. The three points take Chelsea into the top four, but more importantly, will give them belief they can achieve a lot under their new manager.
