Intense lake-effect snow band eyes northwest Indiana; whiteout conditions possible ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Drivers, be alert: Brief, heavy bursts of snow expected in parts of the Chicago area late Friday could lead to potentially hazardous driving conditions, sharply-reduced visibility and snow-covered roads.

While heavy snow is likely throughout the evening in parts of Cook County, the greatest impacts are expected in northwest Indiana, where more than a foot is possible.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday for Lake and Porter counties, calling for more than six inches of lake-effect snow north of U.S. Route 30. According to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes, the most intense snow is expected between 10 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Saturday, with a heavy round of accumulation eyeing northwest Indiana.

Scattered, broad lake-effect snow swept across the region on day Friday, a contrast to the more intense, narrow band of lake-effect snow expected early Saturday.

Meteorologists warn visibility could quickly drop, and travel may be “very difficult” to nearly impossible at times.

Jeanes explained it’s tricky to pinpoint lake-effect snow and wherever the band arrives could see snowfall rates of over two inches per hour at times.

Totals outside the band of lake-effect won’t amount to much – maybe an inch or less. Areas that experience a direct hit could see six plus inches of snow. Even 10 inches wouldn’t be out of the question, Jeanes said.

Snowy conditions were also expected in parts of Cook County on Friday night. A winter storm warning, set to expire at midnight, warns of accumulations greater than six inches, particularly near Lake Michigan, with snowfall rates of one to two inches per hour at times.

Cook County will get a break from the lake-effect snow overnight as the intense band shifts toward northwest Indiana, but the respite won’t be long.

Jeanes said the lake-effect band may slide back to the west and move back into Illinois along the lakefront Saturday morning and last through the afternoon. As a result, a winter weather advisory is set to take effect at 6 a.m. and end at 4 p.m.

The NWS warned during lake-effect snow, weather can vary from a near-whiteout to dry conditions just a few miles away.

After Saturday’s snowfall, Sunday appears largely uneventful.

A clipper system will provide a quick hit of snow Sunday night into Monday, according to the NWS.

Temperatures will gradually increase from then on, with highs in the low-to-mid 30s on both Monday and Tuesday.
