Watch Out For Duce Staley as a Chicago Bears RBs Coach Candidate ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

We’re adding Duce Staley to the short-list of candidates who could be in line to take the Chicago Bears running backs coaching gig.

In addition to finding a new assistant general manager to replace Ian Cunningham, the Bears also need to find a new running backs coach. With Eric Bieniemy off to be the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator, there is an opening to coach the Bears’ backfield. Perhaps they will consider someone who has been connected to gigs in Chicago before.

The Tribune’s Brad Biggs suggests to keep an eye on Eric Studesville and Duce Staley as potential candidates for the Bears’ vacancy at RBs coach. We discussed Studesville as a possible option earlier in the week, but Staley is a new name to consider. Like Studesville, Staley has coaching experience alongside Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson. The two were together with the Detroit Lions in 2021 and 2022. Since then, Staley has coached with the Carolina Panthers (2023) and Cleveland Browns (2024-25).

For what it’s worth, Browns running backs weren’t awful last year. Rookie Quinshon Judkins put up 827 rushing yards and seven ground scores in 14 games. And while Cleveland didn’t have a 1,000-yard rusher in either of the last two seasons, we did see Jerome Ford average 5.4 yards per carry in 14 games last season. In any case, moving on from Cleveland to coach the two-headed monster of D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai in Chicago feels like it would be a worthwhile move.

Will the Bears make another run at Duce Staley?

I can imagine that there are some Bears fans who aren’t familiar with Duce Staley as a coach, if only because his NFL playing career was a notable one. Staley was a third-round pick (71st overall) in the 1997 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. The University of South Carolina product accumulated 1,717 touches, 8,372 scrimmage yards, and 34 total touchdowns in 114 games during his 10-year career. Staley had three years with 1,000+ rushing yards (1998, 1999, 2002) and four seasons in which he accumulated 1,200+ scrimmage yards (1998, 1999, 2001, 2002). He was a heck of a ball player, which might give his voice some extra weight in a coaching setting.

With that being said, some Bears fans might remember that Duce Staley was on Chicago’s radar as a possible assistant coach in 2021. The team was reportedly discussing a coaching opportunity on Matt Nagy’s staff. Staley’s departure from Philly left the Bears and Lions in the hunt to add him to their staff. Detroit ultimately won out. But perhaps things will come full circle in 2026. We will continue monitoring this situation and plan on sharing news when something breaks.
