SANTA ANA — Ahead of arguably his team’s most important game of the season, Segerstrom boys basketball coach Rex Gonzales received a text message from one of his mentors.
Gonzales, a Tustin alum, got some great advice from former Tillers coach Ringo Bossenmeyer that helped him stay composed as the Jaguars beat Ocean View 48-44 on Thursday night at Segerstrom High.
By winning, Segerstrom (16-9, 6-1) clinched a share of the Orange Coast League title with one league game remaining. A win over Westminster in the season finale will make Segerstrom the outright league champions.
“Coach Boss is my mentor and I had a conversation with him today,” Gonzales said. “The last text message he sent me, he said, ‘Win or lose, play hard. Don’t get excited when the moments are going your way. Stay composed when the moments are going bad. That’s when you’re good.’ ”
The bad moments in Thursday’s game came in the form of a nearly four-minute scoreless stretch for the Jaguars that saw Ocean View nearly erase a 13-point deficit.
The Seahawks (10-17, 5-2) mounted a furious rally as Malachi Jefferson scored 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter.
“Even last time when we played at our place, it was kind of similar, it was just more of the second quarter where we kind of figured it out,” Ocean View coach Chris Melton said. “I mean, we think if we play our game where we get the ball out and run, we’ll be OK. And that’s what we did in the last three, four minutes of the fourth quarter, we gave ourselves an opportunity.”

(Photo by David Delgado)A basket by Isaac Young got the Seahawks within a point, 45-44, but Segerstrom was able to get a huge 3-pointer from Nathen Castillo to put the game away for good after not scoring for nearly half the quarter.
“I tried to help them out by calling time out, relaxing them. Because that’s all it is, basketball is mental, mind games,” Gonzales said. “So we just try to play and stay composed.”
The Jaguars were led by Noah Martinez, who scored a team-high 16 points, including 10 in the third quarter.
Castillo finished with nine points, hitting three 3-pointers, while Elijah Harrizon and Chris Gutierrez scored eight points apiece.
Young, a junior forward, scored a game-high 23 points, including 14 in the first half as he did his best to keep Ocean View within striking distance.
As for Gonzales, he was overcome with emotion after the victory.
“It’s a huge accomplishment,” he said. “I just tried to teach them to be competitive, you know, not just Xs and Os. But to stay passionate, to stay composed because life gives you obstacles, ups and down.
“And as you’ve seen, we fought back every single time. The ball didn’t always go our way but somehow we did our job. So I’m proud of my boys.”
“We’ve come a long way as a team, as a program, even me as an individual,” he continued. “We’ve come a long way and we deserve it. I’m not always the person to say that, but we deserve it.”
