For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Indiana University has picked up a commitment from Guatemalan Olympian Lucero Mejia for the fall of 2026.
I feel extremely excited and honored to finally announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Indiana University. I’m thankful for all the support and guidance from God, my family, coaches, and friends. I also want to thank Coach Luke and Coach Ray for this incredible opportunity. Go Hoosiers!
Mejia qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics in the 100 back, representing her home nation of Guatemala. In Paris, she finished 28th overall in the event, clocking 1:03.42.
She also swims in America with the Bolles School Sharks, where she was a member of a pair of state championship winning relays for Bolles. She anchored the 200 free relay in 22.79, and added a key anchor leg to the 200 medley relay in 25.41. Since coming to the states, she has been named to a pair of NISCA All-American teams and another two USA Swimming Scholastic All-American teams.
Mejia has competed on a number of international stages, including the Central American Games, World Junior Championships, and Junior Pan-American games.
Stateside, she closed out her 2025 campaign at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships in Indianapolis, where she clocked a number of short course yards best times. Among those best times, Mejia also placed well in her individual and relay performances. She clocked her best 100 and 200 backstrokes at this meet, touching in 53.58 (13th) and 1:55.87 (11th), respectively. She also added her fastest ever 200 free leading off the Bolles’ 800 free relay in 1:50.02.
In 2023, Mejia logged her fastest 50 and 100 freestyles at the FHSAA Class 1A State Championships leading off a pair of relays. She touched in 23.76 in the 50 free and 50.44 in the 100 free at those championships, her fastest times in each race to this day.
Mejia is also the owner of five individual short course Guatemalan records; including the 50 free (26.70), 200 free (2:02.57), 50 back (29.42), 50 fly (28.76), and 200 IM (2:18.33).

Based on Mejia’s times, she would have qualified for the ‘B’ final in the 200 back, ‘C’ final in the 100 back, and finished 41st in the 100 free at those championships.
Mejia brings a great mix of international experience and high-level domestic racing to an already contending program.
The current backstroke room in Bloomington is loaded with talent in the form of Miranda Grana (junior), Macky Hodges (junior), Mya DeWitt (senior), and Liberty Clark (freshman). The addition of Mejia bolsters that room that will see a lot of change over the next two seasons, putting Mejia firmly in the conversation atop the program.
Mejia has set several of her best times in the last few months, suggesting she still has room to improve and will likely have a few more opportunities to lower them before her debut in Bloomington.
Mejia joins Lylah Theriac, Anne Dickinson, Elizabeth Eichbrecht, Paige Downey, Eva Rottinik, Emma Belk, Ava Metzger, Kayla Han, and Zoe Defabrique in a loaded 2026 recruiting class for Indiana.
