Connor vs. Sid, Murphy’s Outlook, Panarin’s Done in NY, Aidan the Ref? and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

The Blackhawks are back on the ice tonight in beautiful Pittsburgh — a city every hockey mom wants to visit at the end of January! After enjoying a day off somewhere in either Minnesota or Pennsylvania on Wednesday, the Hawks will look to continue playing well against good teams. The goal for tonight: finish with a win. And maybe do it in regulation?

I say that because seven of the Penguins’ 14 home losses have come in extra time or a shootout. The Blackhawks, meanwhile, have needed a shootout to decide three of their last four games. Hooray for skills exhibition!

Connor Murphy‘s days in Chicago appear to be numbered. Whether that means until the Olympic trade freeze — which is now in just six days — or the NHL Trade Deadline or the end of the regular season, Murphy’s time in Chicago has been better than many will give him credit. But he hasn’t seen the full renaissance realized, and that kinda sucks. Good story from Ben Pope on Murphy’s outlook on the coming weeks.

As Connor Murphy's 9-year Blackhawks tenure nears an end, he still dreams about rewarding Chicago for its patience."Even if I’m not here, I would be really happy to see success for this team and the city at any point… People deserve that."New story: t.co/pCOkJuFhoL

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 28, 2026 Stefen Rosner tweeted there were 16 scouts at last night’s Rangers-Islanders game. One of them was from the Chicago Blackhawks. According to Rosner, Dallas, Edmonton and Vegas each had two representatives in the press box. Note to self… You know who those scouts didn’t get to see play last night? The Breadman. It appears Artemi Panarin may have played his last game with the New York Rangers. At least before the Olympics he has. The Rangers will reportedly not dress him again for the final games before the break. I already wrote my thoughts on a potential Panarin-Blackhawks reunion last week. My stance has not changed.

Artemi Panarin will not be in the #NYR lineup tonight because of roster management purposes and is not expected to dress again before the Olympic break.

— Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) January 28, 2026 Sheng Peng at San Jose Hockey Now reported the Sharks have inquired about Panarin, and the star winger would consider signing an extension with San Jose. There was only one game in the OHL last night. Kitchener’s first goal was initially credited to Blackhawks prospect Jack Pridham, but was later given to Sam O’Reilly. Even so, the primary assist for Pridham is his 61st points of the season — which ties him for second in the OHL (one point behind Flint’s Nathan Aspinall, who is a New York Rangers prospect). Aidan Thompson is a sneaky savage when the chirps begin. So when I saw the IceHogs put a mic on him for their outdoor practice, I was instantly clicking. Good stuff from Rockford here. It’s Thursday, which means I’ve got your full schedule for Blackhawks college prospects for the weekend. With the Beanpot beginning in Boston, we’ve got NCAA hockey for four straight days!
