Four dishes we loved in January, like this Biker Jim’s specialty hot dog ...Middle East

News by : (The Denver Post) -

Metro Denver’s food scene has never been as vibrant as it is today, something The Denver Post’s food writers understand. That’s why we’re out on the town as much as possible. Each month, we’ll provide you with recommendations about a few of the dishes we’ve tried. Want to hear about them early? Subscribe to the Stuffed newsletter, where we introduce one each Wednesday.

Poncho’s Mexican Restaurant

“This isn’t the Colorado Mexican food you want if you’re a Colorado native,” reads a customer review on Google of Poncho’s Mexican Restaurant, a south Denver diner that, based on its sun-bleached signage and booths, has seen a lot of love. The customer mentioned that as an indictment, though I think many people would be happy to hear that it’s different — and more reminiscent of what you’ll find in Southern California or the borderlands west of Texas. The “Al Carbon” taco plate ($16) has four sirloin steak tacos on flour tortillas topped with avocados, plus refried beans, Spanish rice and two hot salsas. The salsa that comes with the complimentary chips is even hotter. Poncho’s, which is just off of Federal Boulevard, has a giant menu, including eggs, pancakes and other breakfast dishes served all day.

Bikers and Bakers

On New Year’s Eve, I did what at the same time last year sounded unthinkable: I ate one of Biker Jim’s gourmet hot dogs. “Biker” Jim Pittenger opened a stand inside Denver’s Avanti Food & Beverage in November after reclaiming his brand name from a business deal gone bad, now going under the “Bikers and Bakers” name. It was Pittenger’s wild creations that first took hold of Denver and beyond, such as the ostrich brat that’s advertised as “a smoky treat with a peppery finish” ($13 online). On the last day of 2025, I ordered one of the listed specials that topped the dog with bacon jam, blue cheese and crispy onions. The flavor was ridiculous, the bun dependable and the size big enough to call a lunch. Now I know what all the hype was about.

Berliner Haus

Speaking of Avanti Food & Beverage, another concept, Berliner Haus, launched around the same time as Bikers and Bakers in the stall next door. A celebrated former food truck, its specialty is the doner kebab, a German street-food sandwich made with Turkish pide. It consists of a flatbread that’s gashed open and stuffed over the brim with meat, garlic or chile sauces and a fresh salad mix of red cabbage, onions and cucumbers. I ordered mine with chicken ($14), though there is one with falafel ($16) and another with beef and lamb ($15). The individual parts are stellar on their own; together, they combine into a sandwich that is large, juicy and exploding with flavor.

Yu’s Noodle Shop

In Lone Tree, a hand-pulled noodle shop is attracting some soup-centered attention. Yu’s Noodle Shop, like the recently opened Magic Noodle House in Denver, also features its star chef tossing long strands of noodles into boiling vats of water. Theirs are thinner, and served with clear broth, more traditional in Lanzhou, China, the birthplace of hand-pulled noodle bowls. The wontons are also handmade and stuffed with pork, their wraps slippery yet chewy as they simmer in the broth. At the end of the day, it’s the taste, not the spectacle, that counts.
