“Romance is in the cards,” showrunner Gwen Sigan exclusively told Us Weekly ahead of the Wednesday, January 28, episode, hinting that fans should tune in tonight to see exactly what that means for Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins).
Love is “still in the cards” for the cop, Sigan reassured Us. She noted that Atwater had a “great meet-cute” with fellow police officer Tasha Fox (Karen Obilom) during episode 5 this season — and that was just the beginning. (Atwater was reunited with former police academy pal Tasha after a bombing in downtown Chicago made them partners for the day.)
“We’ve got more things planned for his romance down the line,” the showrunner explained. “We’ll see sort of another Atwater-centric episode in episode 11 [which airs on Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET], and it’s a really fun episode.”

Sigan said that the new episode will get “back to” when Tasha “came on the scene” during episode 5, in the sense that she “presented a challenge for him” that has shifted his perception.
“She was basically like, ‘I’m getting out of Chicago. I’m done with Chicago.’ But she also knew exactly what she wanted,” Sigan said of Tasha’s mindset when she met Atwater. “[For Atwater] her just pushing him a little bit on, like, ‘Well, what do you want?’ It makes him reflect a bit and start thinking on that question.”
She added that fans will see Atwater “exploring some answers and what that might look like.”

Unlike his coworkers Adam Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) and Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati), who got married during season 12 following three engagements, Atwater hasn’t brought much of his love life to his job.
While Atwater’s relationship status will be addressed starting with Wednesday’s “On the Way” episode, he isn’t the only character that will be focused on the second half of the season.

Sigan told Us that Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar), who has been struggling with his religion and how it plays a part in his job, will finally start building back his life following the conclusion of the Odell Morgan (Chad L. Coleman) case. (During episode 10, Dante figured out who killed Odell’s wife and cleared his name, which brought him closure as the officer in charge.)
“Him putting in the hours on this case is almost like putting hours back into his faith,” Sigan said of Dante’s latest efforts at work. “It helps him get closer to healing.”
She teased, “The rest of the season you will see him coming out of those depths and also redefining a bit what his religion looks like, but also what it looks like in relationship to his job and to policing.”
