Geneva police need public support on referendum to build new $60 million station ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A suburban police department is seeking support on a referendum to help pay for a new $60 million dollar police station.

Officials said the building at 20 Police Plaza first opened in 1915. The last renovation was about twenty years ago.

The deputy chief said they’re in desperate need of a new facility to keep up with modern policing operations and standards, and believes a new building would improve safety, security, and training for first responders and the community.

Voters in Geneva will decide on the measure when it appears on ballots in the March election.

Geneva deputy police chief Matt Dean took NBC Chicago on a tour Wednesday, showing the current state of their building, the conditions, and issues.

“I think it really boils down to the infrastructure of our current building, the inefficiencies that we have here and the effectiveness of our current building compared to what modern facilities look like,” he said.

His department is turning to Geneva taxpayers for help to pay for a new state-of-the-art facility on South Street, giving them a dedicated space to fight crime, train, recruit, and provide additional support for victims.

“Certainly, the staff here will have the benefit of the building, but we’re really building the potential building for the community itself,” he said.

If approved, the average household in Geneva will pay an additional $272 dollars per year in property taxes. Families can calculate their exact cost through the city’s website.

“Residents will know before they vote if they want to go on there [the city’s website] they can know ‘this will be X dollars extra a year that I would have to pay,’ so it’s very transparent very much there,” said Melanie Mannon, Geneva Chair of the Strategic Planning Advisory Committee.

Renderings provided show a space for an indoor training range and indoor parking. Right now, the department can only fit three vehicles in their current space despite having a fleet of 25.

Above all, officials want the building to be a central hub for the community serving more than just officers.

“There’s all kinds of different things people come in for and to have that be an inviting place and a place that people feel welcomed, I think that’s central to what Geneva wants to provide for the community,” she said.

The city is planning to host three open houses in February for voters to learn more about the referendum.

The department is also offering in-person tours. Click here to register.
