Florida kicker Trey Smack bucked the notion that kickers can’t help their NFL Draft stock in college football all-star games.
Because according to NFL.com draft analyst Chad Reuter, Smack did just that on Tuesday night in Frisco, Texas, where the West team defeated the East team, 21-17, in the 101st edition of the East-West Shrine Bowl.
Reuter picked out 8 NFL Draft prospects who stood out in the historic all-star game, where players come to either prove to scouts that they belong in the draft or prove to those scouts that they should be high up in that draft. Whatever the case, they come to help their draft stock, and Reuter believes that Smack did just that.
He was one of Reuter’s chosen 8 from the game, with 20 more prospects being listed as honorable mentions. Smack will hope his performance in late January pays dividends in late April, when the draft takes place starting on April 23 in Pittsburgh.

Kickers don’t often get noticed during all-star games, but Smack deserves attention. He connected on a 57-yard field goal with great rotation and elevation at the end of the first half. Smack also squared up against nifty returner Michael Wortham on a second-half kickoff, bringing him down in the open field.
During his senior year at Florida, Smack converted 18 of 22 field-goal attempts, making 5 of 6 kicks from both 40-to-49 yards and from 50-plus yards. Smack’s season-long kick was 56 yards, and he converted 27 of 28 extra-point attempts.
Now, after his glowing performance in the Shrine Bowl, Smack will play the draft waiting game along with every other NFL prospect.
