‘It was bolted to the floor:' Video shows masked burglars stealing ATM machine from West Town store ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Chicago police issued a warning for small businesses about a crew of masked thieves breaking into stores and stealing ATMs, with one of the latest incidents at a mom-and-pop convenience store in the city’s West Town neighborhood caught on Ring Camera.

“I don’t know how much they think they’re going to get out of it especially from a small grocery store like this,” Candy’s Grocery Store owner Adriana Alcala Markese told NBC Chicago. According to Alcala Markese, it’s the second time in recent months the store has seen a break-in.

Early Saturday morning, security footage showed a group of masked thieves smashing their way into the store. Seconds later the burglars walked out hauling the ATM.

“It was all the way in the back and it was bolted to our floor, because it wasn’t the first time that an ATM was stolen from here,” she said. “I can’t take much more. The door is going to remain in wood for quite a while. I don’t have two thousand dollars to drop on a door again.”

Police believe the same crew may be linked to nine other similar burglaries in January alone across the city, including in Brighton Park, Lincoln Park, Rogers Park, and Uptown.

In Buena Park, the owner of New York Food Mart and Deli, in the 4100 block of N. Broadway, said his business was also targeted Saturday.

“They knew exactly,” store owner Ibrahim Abuthaher said. “They’ve been here before I’m 100% sure honestly.”

He said the crooks rigged up his ATM, ripped and pulled it out from its foundation using their vehicle around 7 a.m.

“They smashed the floor, the windows, the door, and they make me lose a lot of money,” he said.

Abuthaher told NBC Chicago that he’s been in business for less than a year. In October, his store was also broken into.

“They stole the register, they tried to take the ATM, but because it was screwed to the floor they couldn’t get it,” he said. “But this time they only came for the ATM.”

As police work to identify the suspects, the owner back in West Town said she’s reaching her breaking point and is considering close her decades old business for good.

“I’ve always considered it, but these last two times it’s kinda like, I can’t do this no more,” she said. “I can’t afford to do this anymore—it’s hard.”
