ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Did you feel the earth shaking slightly on Tuesday night? The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 4.1 earthquake about 60 miles north of Toronto just before 11 p.m. That’s about 120 miles north of Rochester.

A magnitude 4.1 is usually classified as “lightly felt” with no damage expected. However, News10NBC has seen reports of people feeling the shaking in Western New York.

The Rochester region occasionally feels earthquakes, but never a severe one. The strongest earthquake ever recorded in Western New York was a magnitude 4.7, centered near Corfu in Genesee County, back in 1929. First Alert Meteorologist Glenn Johnson went in-depth on why we occasionally feel earthquakes.
