Learning, Top Line Success, Nazar’s Speed, Dickinson’s Perspective, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

The Blackhawks lost a game last night. I really like this paragraph from Mark Lazerus’ postgame for The Athletic after accounting for Minnesota’s three-goal comeback:

None of those was a ghastly, unforgivable miscue by the Blackhawks. The Wild are just good. And they fought back. Sometimes that’s just how it happens. Hockey’s not always a zero-sum game.

Earlier this morning I wrote about the idea of “good losses” for the Blackhawks right now. This roster will undoubtedly evolve in the coming weeks before the NHL Trade Deadline, but we should be looking for improvement — especially from the young players. I believe we’re seeing that right now.

As I noted, over the last six days the Blackhawks have faced three of the top-five teams in the NHL in point percentage and have points in those three games. The fourth game was against the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions — and that game fell apart in the third after two competitive periods. As the Beatles once said, you’ve got to admit it’s getting better. Of course we want wins, but young players learn what it takes from losses like last night.

Connor Bedard was electric last night. He did everything but score. His eight shots on goal were the second-most of his career to date, and he attempted a team-high 11 shots and had 10 individual scoring chances. Bedard had 1.22 individual expected goals last night. He did pick up one apple in the game, which inches him closer to another all-time Blackhawks record. He’s one of only four skaters in the 100-year history of the franchise to have more than 100 assists before turning 21.

Skaters in #Blackhawks history with 100+ assists before turning 21:1. Eddie Olczyk – 1152. Connor Bedard – 112 (inc one tonight)3. Patrick Kane – 1084. Denis Savard – 106 pic.twitter.com/RbcLPtNh2J

— Tab Bamford (@The1Tab) January 28, 2026 Frank Nazar has been flying lately. As noted below, he recorded his fastest speed burst of the season on Sunday. Last night, the Blackhawks experimented with Nazar, Bedard and Teuvo Teräväinen on a line together. The results were really good. According to Natural Stat Trick, they spent 11:46 together at 5-on-5 last night, which was the second-most ice time for a line in the game (behind Bertuzzi-Dickinson-Mikheyev). In that time, the Blackhawks had a 16-6 shot attempt advantage, an 11-3 shot on goal advantage and a 1.36-0.46 expected goals for advantage. And they did that against a good team. Nazar won 9 of 19 faceoffs and attempted five shots with two individual high-danger chances. I look forward to the Blackhawks running this line back in future games.

From Sunday's game: This burst from Frank Nazar was tracked at 23.76 mph — the 11th-fastest speed burst across the NHL this season. So Nazar now officially has 99th-percentile speed. pic.twitter.com/9lHEFgEgni

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) January 28, 2026 Really good story here from Ben Pope on Jason Dickinson‘s perspective right now as the trade deadline(s) near and his name increasingly becomes popular in rumors. He knows his time in Chicago may come to an end before the 82nd game of the 2025-26 season. He’s been a huge trade win for the Blackhawks, and a really good player during his time in Chicago.

Jason Dickinson realizes the Blackhawks might trade him to make room for kids graduating into the NHL.But in the meantime, he loves those kids."There’s been so much good out of my time here. If it ends this year, I can look back on it fondly."Story: t.co/1grXuowKYm

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 27, 2026 The Blackhawks took their moms on the trip to Minnesota and Pittsburgh. My question: was there no better trip for them to go on than Minnesota and Pittsburgh in late January? Not like… Vegas and LA in early December? No offense to Minnesota and Pittsburgh, but… with the weather, the options are somewhat limited this time of year.

— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) January 26, 2026 We’ve talked about the struggles of André Burakovsky here a fair amount recently. Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill spoke about it after practice on Monday. On last night’s pregame show, Frank Seravalli dropped his top ten Blackhawks prospects in the system: Anton Frondell Sam Rinzel Roman Kantserov Sacha Boisvert Václav Nestrašil Kevin Korchinski Nick Lardis Marek Vanacker AJ Spellacy Mason West In the OHL last night, Jack Pridham picked up assists on Kitchener’s first and third goals in a 4-1 win. He became just the fifth player in the OHL to reach 60 points this season. Drew Commesso had to leave last night’s IceHogs game because of an upper-body injury. If you were looking for Nick Lardis in the IceHogs’ box score last night, he didn’t play because he was sick. What will Lardis and Kevin Korchinski be wearing in a few weeks? The Rockford IceHogs, as the hosts this year, got to introduce the jerseys for this year’s AHL All-Star Classic. They’re clean.

The Blackhawks will face the Penguins on Thursday night and it appears they won’t see Bryan Rust. Unless there’s still a pending appeal, he’ll be serving part of a three-game suspension for a cheap shot on Vancouver’s Brock Boeser.
